RECTANGLE, SCUARE AND FRACTIONS

Lesson plan: This lesson takes place outside around the schoolhouse. Students take pairs and look for a suitable place for themselves. First they have to measure and draw a farmland with given measurements. Then they have to find its area and start to desing this land (forest, farmbuildings, fields, a pond etc). All these areas are given in fractions. Students have to calculate the area and then think of shapes with suitable length and width. Finally of course the must not forget drawing and decorating their work.

Things students will need: a) worksheet + pen b) white and colourful chalk c) measuring tape Results: a) students were out of the classroom in the fresh air b) students were moving around instead of sitting c) students learned to work in pairs d) students have consolidated their knowledge of fractions, squares and rectangles

Lesson plan: At the beginning of a lesson teacher gives students a peace of A4 paper and asks them to fold a paper plane for themselves. After that they make pairs (teams) and start to fly their planes in turns. They compeat at each other. It`s important that each pair measures their result themselves and writes it down. Then students can really see what the meter or two means. After three rounds it`s time for a summary. Teacher explains how to find the average and each team calculates it.

A program where children can make interactive diagrams, shapes. I use it a lot in geometrics.

PERCENTAGE AND PER MILLE

Things needed for the lesson: a) salt + cups + spoons b) kitchen scale c) golden bracelet + silver ring + magnifying glass d) workheets Results: a) students were doing pairwork and moving around the classroom from one nest to another b) students got to make and taste the salty water of different seas c) percentage and per mille became tangible and visible

Lesson plan: The teacher has prepared 4 nests with necessary things in the classroom. The students make pairs and start to move from one nest to another. 1. nest: saltiness of seas Salt, glasses, spoons, a scale and instructions of how to mix a water of our Gulf of Finland and Red Sea. They can taste it also. 2. nest: evaporation A worksheet (with pictures, schemes and instructions) about an evaporation. 3. nest: jevelry One golden bracelet, one silver ring and a magnifying glass. Students look up the hallmarks of given jevelry and calculate the real grams of gold or silver they are holding in their hands. 4. nest: murder mystery crossword One fun and misterious crossword where students have to solve the murder mystery. That idea is taken somehere from the internet and redone.

Lesson plan: At the beginning of a lesson students make pairs (teams) and teacher gives them a worksheet that they can fill with their mate. Then teacher has previously put on the table one bag of sugar (one kilo), a bar of chocolate (100 g), a pack of of milk (1 liter), a glass of water (200 ml) so that students can see and touch what they are learning in math. After that it`s time to make pancakes for themselves.
