This book describes the water cycle and provides a simple activity that allows students to observe the parts of the water cycle.

STEP 3: When the water droplets become too large, precipitation occurs and the water falls down from the sky. Precipitation can be in the form of rain, snow, sleet or hail.

STEP 2: As water vapor&nbsp;rises in the sky, it cools down and condenses, forming clouds made of very small droplets of water. Condensation is when vapor changes into liquid water.

STEP 1: Energy from the sun heats up ocean water and causes the water to evaporate. Evaporation is when liquid water changes into gas called water vapor.

Spring Thaw 2021

In late March, the spring thaw begins! Do you recognize this place?

Questions 1. Did you observe the ice cube change into liquid water? 2. Did the liquid water at the bottom of the baggie evaporate? How do you know? 3. Did you see condensation occur? Where in the baggie did you see it? 4. Did the water precipitate in your baggie? How do you know? 5. Draw a picture of your baggie and ice. Show using arrows the movement of water during your observations. 6. Label your drawing with evaporation, condensation, and precipitation. Did this activity show all of the steps of the water cycle?

Try this fun activity on a sunny day to observe the water cycle!

The Water Cycle Activity MATERIALS: one ice cube, a plastic baggie, tape, a sunny window, a piece of white paper and a pencil.

DIRECTIONS: 1. First put your ice cube into the plastic baggie and zip it closed or tape the opening if the baggie does not have a zipper. 2. Tape the baggie to the glass part of a sunny window. 3. Watch what happens over several hours. You might need watch it over several days, if the sun is not warm enough. 4. Draw a picture of your baggie and ice. Show with arrows the movement of water during your observations.
