BUILDING BETTER STUDENTS AND BETTER PEOPLE Giving students new insights

The main purpose of the mobility was to study abroad for 8 days. With this project we could observe the school difference between Portugal and Italy. On the first day of school&nbsp; we had Maths&nbsp; and computing class, the first noticeable difference was the fact that they did not have pictures to teach them.

Schools in Italy are more closed with bars on windows, students cannot leave the room just for the bathroom and they have only a break of 20 minutes. Students in Italy&nbsp; usually write in digital support, which shows a very large evolution, the whole class uses digital support and they don't have to handwrite anything. During the week I went to a school in Taranto, this school was only aimed at the last year of secondary school, a school that covers all topics: Humanities and Sciences. At school we made&nbsp; presentations about Portugal and talked&nbsp; about the differences in teaching used in Italy and Portugal.

The first day was a travel day. We met at the airport around 12:00 and we took the plane to Bari airport, landed and took a bus to Taranto. In Taranto we met our host families and went to their respective homes. The next day we had the first day at school, where we met my host's classmates. We had lunch at school, typical food there. In the afternoon we went to the old part of the city to visit a military castle of the navy and back home. On the third day at school by &nbsp;talking with my host's classmates I realized the differences in the teaching method as they only had classes in the morning but have classes on Saturday as opposed to us having classes only from Monday to Friday and we could have classes during the whole day and they also had different subjects like Latin and also, in some subjects they learned certain things first than we do &nbsp;because during the classes they learned things that I was &nbsp;only taught in the 11th grade. After finishing classes, I had lunch at home and then I went for a walk with my host around the city. And at night my host took me to a restaurant to taste the famous Italian pizza. On the fourth day and we went back to school and we attended &nbsp;different classes and we also went to a theatre to attend &nbsp;an orchestra and then we had the afternoon free and I took the opportunity to rest On the fifth day we went to school and in the afternoon we went to visit other towns around Taranto like Alberobelo where we saw particularly strange houses because they had cone-shaped roofs and that's how the day ended.

The next day we went back to school and in the afternoon we went to play football with the Italians. On the seventh day, which was &nbsp;Saturday, we went to school again in the afternoon. We went to the house of another Italian who was welcoming us to live together. On the eighth day we went back to school and explored the school and in the afternoon my host took me to Lecce where I could visit several monuments.And on the last day we went to school for the last time and in the afternoon it was time to return. We went to Bari airport by bus where we took the plane back to Portugal.

My Learning Experience as an accompanying teacher at Liceo Scientifico G. Battaglini- Taranto -Italy

As an accompanying and language teacher of a small group of students , I would like to say how rewarding it is/was to promote learning and knowledge. Although Knowledge  can be accessed through a textbook  or a video, inside the classroom ( traditional class), it might never replace the reality, the live lesson, the authentic situation, the curiosity and subtlety of detail, as  I had the opportunity to observe it , for several times, during this experience.

It is important to know that in order to be successful (I am also talking about academic success) it is very important to deal with day-to-day life, as it leads students to take the initiative, to seek solutions and to make decisions independently and autonomously. It is important to notice that each passing day , the students became less dependent on the teacher, therefore on me. They understood that learning to move in the reality of everyday life is a constant and continuous process. Because students/people are often subjected to new situations that require reaction and flexibility.

As always,the morning routine stayed the same, however, on this day, some of the hostees left their classrooms and went to a 12th grade class where we stayed for one hour before returning to our classrooms. At around 11am we left the school to go see an orchestra live,celebrating their 30 years of music- “Orchestra Della Magna Grecia”. After that, we met with our hosts and returned home. My host invited Luís,Mariana and João (and their respective hosts) for dinner, where we ate some really good burgers. We spent some time together playing video games until everyone else had to leave.

However new &nbsp;learnings &nbsp;must be incorporated. Furthermore, if they become familiar with a variety of natural accents or expressions that cannot be found in textbooks, accepting that all varieties of English are equally appreciated, they can more naturally extend this tolerance to other countries. This leads to recognise the need for lifelong learning and breaking down barriers. They knew how to deal with their own strengths but also limitations, which can contribute to increase tolerance and respect for other speakers (who may be dealing with the same problems).

Additionally, I am convinced that these students understood that the practical knowledge of a foreign language is necessary as an essential tool for the functioning of other fields and other areas of their lives as it fosters an understanding of the interrelation of language and human nature. Finally, they realised that communication in real life does not only happen between peers, but also in situations that can influence their future, their career or in emergency situations.

Hi&#160; I' m Mariana&#160; Here's&#160; the highlights about my incredible experience in&#160; Taranto

On the 16th of January&nbsp; 2023, a group of 11&nbsp; portuguese students participating in the Erasmus+ Project in Traranto left for Italy and landed in Bari at 19:00. &nbsp;I was one of that fortunate group . As soon as we landed we noticed that our time had changed, for one more hour than in Portugal. Then we went fromBari to Taranto in two vans that took us to the school where I had theopportunity to meet my host Samuele and his parents who were very warm-hearted sincethe first moment. They took me to dinner at a pizzeria where I had a Margherita pizza, which was delicious. Right after dinner, we went home where I met Samuele's brother (Mattea) and his pet (a German shepherd). Later I unpacked mybags and went to sleep. The next day I went to school and I was informed that their education system was different from what I was used to because they focused on scientific subjects&nbsp; and as I am from Humanities I wasn't used to it. Soon after, I was introduced to Samuele's classmates and teachers who soon explained to me the teaching methods of their classes. Still that day, in the afternoon I went to visit the Aragonese Castle, which is a fifteenth-century fortification in Taranto, which was designed to protect the city's canal and built on Byzantine structures, as explained by the guide. Later I went home to rest. The next day we went to visit Alberobello, one of the most visited places in Puglia, due to its famous houses with conical roofs, the "trulli". Then we went on a bus to our homes to rest.

The next day Samuele's parents took me to visit the center of Carosino and later Brindisi, which was an important trading port for the Roman Empire. In these two places I had contact with new cultures and monuments. We also had the privilege of attending the Orchestra Magna Grecia and their Italian love-themed songs. I also visited the old part of Taranto with Samuele's parents and there I visited churches and typical shops. I also managed to try new foods such as Panzerotti and Fritata and carbonara, among many other delicacies. And this amazing experience lasted until the 23rd at 7:00 pm we got on the plane that would take us back to Portugal. We arrived at Sá Carneiro airport at 21:20, where I met my parents and went home after a great week that allowed me to test my English&nbsp; communication skills and experience a new culture and to make new friends for the rest of my life.

I woke up at 7am and left the house at 8am.&nbsp; Me and Giovanni went to the school with Mattia and Luís while getting to know each other on the way. We had classes until 1pm and then everyone in the ERASMUS+ project got together to go visit the aragonese castle of Taranto. After the visit, me and Giovanni went home to rest so we could later meet with Carlo and João and have dinner at their house.

What an incredible week &nbsp;I’ve spent &nbsp;in Taranto, &nbsp;Italy. I met new people, made new friends and I got in contact with a different way of teaching. School starts at 8:00am and finishes at 13:30 pm&nbsp; every day.There aren’t any classes in the afternoon. Each classroom as a smart board/display making it easier the teaching and learning process. Additionally each student has his own tablet. Therefore all notes, tasks or communications are easily saved . I think that by using it they won’t get lost . Another diference is that there is another school year just to prepare for the exams. &nbsp;The&nbsp; schools are larger &nbsp;but there aren’t outdoor spaces for students to hang out &nbsp;or relax. There are fewer breaks. They only have a ten-minute break and we have four at different times. In Portugal we have a much smaller workload than they do in Italy, for example we don't have school on Saturdays and they do, they also have a lot of homework compared to us. In terms of courses it's completely different because we only have 5 subjects while they have much more. But apart from attending classes and getting to know new methods of learning I could experience a lot more… I &nbsp;had a taste of Italian culture visiting some interesting and beautiful places plus gastronomy , History and Languages (English and Italian) , I made fantastic friends and I met people for life!

The final day… we had our last day of italian classes of the ERASMUS+ week and then Giovanni invited his class for some sushi where I ate together with Mariana and Luís.&nbsp; We stayed in the restaurant until the last few minutes, where we all got together and said our goodbyes! From here, we went&nbsp; to the Bari airport, kill some time playing cards,and board our plane to Portugal. And that is how my ERASMUS+ week went.

As a language teacher, it is my wish to promote autonomy, and in this group of students it was gratifying to see  they were responsible for organizing their own language learning process (English/Italian ;Ciao; stai bene ?; Buongiorno etc. ) to use it as a vital process for the proper functioning in a multicultural environment and , after all, they understood that communication is a two-way process and that they  will often be helped by their interlocutors/speakers. They also realised that, after all, in this form of communication they can reduce the level of stress, but at the same time, they realised that the success of communicating a message is their sole responsibility and therefore the learning they have done up to that very moment is important.

Our second day of school started and we went by as the first,and, after school, Giovanni invited me,Luís,Mariana and their respective hosts for a long walk by the sea where we spent a few hours talking and enjoying the views before going to a very expensive pizza dinner with everyone involved in the ERASMUS+ project, after the dinner we all went home

&nbsp;It’s saturday! In Portugal, students would be enjoying their weekend out of school,but in Italy, students are required to go to school on saturdays as well. &nbsp;On saturdays,there is what’s called an “Open Day” which is a concept that allows people to visit the school and see what happens there. &nbsp;After school,Giovanni’s family took me,Luís,João and their respective hosts to visit Lecce, a city one hour from Taranto, there we had lunch together and went into a few stores. &nbsp;After the visit, we had dinner at Carlo’s house (João’s host) and went home.

My week in Italy and my first Erasmus experience

We left the airport at 3pm and landed at the Bari airport at 7:30pm and finally arrived at Taranto at 8:20pm I met my host, Giovanni, and went home on foot. At home, I met Giovanni’s family and had pasta for dinner.

Italy’s school system is very different from ours, It has proper schools for specific subjects that students want to study (our school was “Liceo scientifico” so it was mostly comprised of Technology,Chemistry,Science and Math subjects). &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Unlike Portugal’s inconsistent school schedules, Italy’s school schedule is fixed, with students from every class leaving at 1pm everyday, however,they have school on saturdays in order to make up for the free time. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;During my time watching some classes, I’ve felt that their classes feel more captivating and dynamic thanks to the giant tablet they have on the walls, during one of our English classes, the teacher made students watch two movie scenes in English (A and B) and then explain them.&nbsp;&nbsp; We (me,Mariana,Luís and Beatriz) were told we had to then, evaluate and decide which student had described the scene the best. That student would then get a prize: Delaying their next oral presentation, which I thought was very interesting. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;As well as the Italian teacher spinning a wheel to pick a student to conjugate a verb. During breaks, students stay in the classroom and wait for the next teacher to arrive, as well as stand up everytime the teacher enters the room, this works as a form of respect for the teacher.

Classes captivating and dynamic

On this day, we left the house at 9am, so the extra hour of sleep was nice,as usual, we had school and, since we were having English class,I presented our powerpoint together with Mariana and Luís. The students and the teacher asked us a few questions about Portugal and our school life, and, after that we left for a trip with everyone from the ERASMUS+ project to visit Alberobello. That trip lasted until 7pm, and me and Giovanni went home to rest for tomorrow.

On day six we, (me,Mariana and Luís) switched it up a bit and went to a different classroom where we did some kahoots and watched some chess that other students were playing. During one of the classes, a group of younger students came into our room to see their future school, should they decide to enroll in it. After school, we went home, had some rest, and went out to eat some hamburgers together.
