Here at GSOTA, we have hardworking staff members and delicious fresh lunch served to our students everyday. We surround our students with a kind atmosphere. Our students have also made an amazing amount of improvement over the year. Our school is also very clean because of our hard working maintenance, Mr. Rodney.
Class of the week
Words by Shayla C

Questions I asked Ms. Axelrad about her and her class
How many years have you been teaching before you joined GSOTA? She replied with "I've been teaching for 5 years but before I was teaching I was a tutor for a couple of years."

Do you feel we (her students in journalism) have improved as a journalist? She replied with "I feel my journalists have shown great improvement over the quarter and I love to read all my students articles."

I didn't ask a third question, instead i'm doing a fun fact about Ms. Axelrad! Fun Fact: She has a tik tok account for her cats and it has over 60k followers and one of her videos got 2.3 million views!

Loading...
Why is art so important? Art can be a way for people to express themselves, culture, others, etc. Art can help spread information and can shape our lives and point of views. You might not notice it but art is all around you, from your house, to your food, even your clothing is a form of art. The more we continue to learn about art the more ways we learn how to express and create the world around us.

"This or That" is a game where there are two choices where one must be chosen over the other. I interviewed a few students here at GSOTA about what they would choose over some interesting "This or That" topics.

Feel free to play and choose what you'd rather have.

Now let the game
"This or "That" commence!

To learn a story, watching a movie is an entertaining and visual way, while reading a book is an informative way and can improve vocabulary.

I asked 8th grader Shantel what she would pick: Movies or books?

She said books since it's easier to read and listen to audiobooks where you can multitask.

Winter is the coldest whereas summer is the warmest/hottest. Both seasons have their adverse effects on people because of its extreme cold and heat, respectively.

I asked 8th grader Liz which season she'd rather enjoy: Winter or summer?

She answered Summer since it has a refreshing warm weather.

Peanut butter and Nutella both have their ups and downs where it's up to the individual to decide if the sweet or savory nut flavor meets their expectations.

I asked 8th grader Alyssa what she would choose: Peanut butter or Nutella?

She said Nutella since it's a spread that you can always eat from the jar.

Overall, both tap and bottled water are considered good ways to hydrate. Tap water's less expensive and more environmentally friendly, while bottled water is a safer option with it being tap water that's filtered.

I asked Liz what she would drink: Tap or bottled water?

She replied that it depends on what you want to prefer.
Board Games Around The World
By Michael and Aniyah
Shogi
Shogi is somewhat like Chess, two players go against each other with 20 pieces that have different abilities and rules for each piece. In Shogi, any piece except for king and gold general can promote or change by flipping them over, you can choose if you want to promote them or not. When you capture a piece, it will switch sides. Shogi is based off of Indian Chaturnaga and is suspected to be made in the 6th century.
Jenga
Jenga was created by Leslie Scott, the co-founder of Oxford Games in the UK. The game was created in 1983 and has sold over 50 million sets. The name comes from kujenga which in Swahili means build. The game works by taking out pieces of a wood tower and the person that makes the tower fall, loses
Mancala
Mancala or Shoro originally came from South Africa. It went all the way back to ancient egypt. Tombs and caves have been found with pits like these. The game is easy. You have to try to get all the marbles in your hole by grabbing a fist full of marbles and going in a circle around the board while leaving one marble in each hole you land on. The player with the most marbles win!
Monopoly
Monopoly originated from the U.S and is still the most popular game to this day. The game is about becoming a wealthy owner of streets around the board, like park place or st charles. if a person has no money then they become " bankrupted" and lose the game. The last person standing with most money, Wins!
Our guys in salisbury

This game is about the Salisbury Poisonings which was a true crime and Russia seemed to think of it as a joke. The game consists of the green spray with a skull face and cross bones on it ( which is the poison) used in the game. The board also has illustration of the two suspects of the poisonings. I don't you should allow your kids to play this game especially if they're younger than 12.
Three Best Cultural Music Genres
African Jazz
Korean Kpop
By Lizette
Mexican Corridos
African-American jazz began reaching South Africa in the early 20th century. The influence and popularity of ragtime and dixieland music lead to the development of a uniquely South African musical form called marabi. This mixed American sounds with African cyclical harmonies and a trance-like rhythm.
K-pop's increasing popularity forms part of Hallyu, or the Korean Wave: the popularity of South Korean culture in other countries. K-Pop idols and their music have positively contributed to South Korean diplomacy, economy, human rights movements, and the country's global status for decades, especially during times of high political tension.
The corrido is a popular narrative metrical tale and poetry that forms a ballad. Songs are often about oppression, history, daily life for criminals, the vaquero lifestyle, and other socially relevant topics. An important part of the Mexican and Mexican American oral tradition, corridos are a way of documenting the experiences of people who often have no other voice. They are always written from the perspective of el pueblo, everyday people.

Dogs are descendants from wolves. According to pbs.org,"All modern dogs are descendants of wolves, though this domestication may have happened twice, producing groups of dogs descended from two unique common ancestors. How and when this domestication happened has been a matter of speculation." Even though dogs are descendants from wolves most are now house pets to human or animal companions. Dogs scientific name is Canis familiaris, they are also called to some as domesticated wolves. FUN FACT: the first dog on earth was called Cynodictis it evolved from Miacis. The Miacis isn't a dog but dogs did evolve from it.
The descendents of domestic cats are wildcats called Felis silvestris lybica that originated in the Fertile Crescent in the Near East Neolithic period and in ancient Egypt in the Classical period. According to cats.org,"Nearly all cats, including lions, tigers and the domestic cat, are descended from one prehistoric creature. The oldest known relative, the African Wildcat, first developed over 12 millions years ago. The species still exists, living in Savannah in the Middle East and Africa." The descendants of domestic cats are wildcats but they have learned to adapt to living with humans and most are house cats. Cats are closely related to Felis silvestris grampia a Scottish wildcat.
Fishs descendants are Pikaia, Haikouichthys and Myllokunmingia. According to threachaeloglist,"The evolution of fish began about 530 million years ago during the Cambrian explosion. Early fish from the fossil record are represented by a group of small, jawless, armoured fish known as ostracoderms. Jawless fish lineages are mostly extinct. An extant clade, the lampreys may approximate ancient pre-jawed fish." As you can see fish have come a long way and look very different from the Pikaia, Haikouichthys and Myllokunmingia and most now have homes with humans. The rarest fish in the world is The Devils Hole Pupfish.
The known descendants of parakeets are specifically lories and lorikeets, budgerigars, Amazon and African gray parrots. According to nhm.ac.uk,"Birds evolved from a group of meat-eating dinosaurs called theropods. That's the same group that Tyrannosaurus rex belonged to, although birds evolved from small theropods, not huge ones like T. rex. The oldest bird fossils are about 150 million years old." Parakeets have survived for a long time and have evolved from theropods and most now live in cages with families. Parakeets and Lorries can both talk in english and they are great talkers.
The descendents of rabbits are zalambdalestes they are mammals known to be around 85 million years old. According to amnh.org,"An extinct Central Asian group of mammals called zalambdalestes are known to be more than 85 million years old, and they shared a close evolutionary relationship with modern rabbits, a hypothesis suggested by some paleontologists." Rabbits have evolved from an extinct species in the Central Asian group, now they live with humans and eat a lot of carrots and vegetables. Rabbits are also related to  hares, and pikas and they all belong to a mammal group sometimes called lagomorphs but their scientific name is Lagomorpha.

507 years old (Now deceased)
A team of researchers from Bangor University have announced that the oldest animal in the world, a species of Icelandic clam known as an ocean quahog, was 507-years-old. Known as Ming, the bivalve mollusc was ‘born’ in 1499, meaning it was swimming in the oceans before Henry VIII took the English throne.
Greenland sharks (Somniosus microcephalus), one of the top predators in the Arctic and the longest-living vertebrates in the world, are slow-moving and frequently blinded by eye parasites. A 16-foot Greenland shark that was taken as bycatch in fishing nets in 2016 was the subject of a study that employed a novel method to date the animal.

Scientists determined the specimen was roughly 392 years old, give or take 120 years, by radiocarbon dating a protein that develops in the organism's eyes before birth and survives throughout its lifetime. According to that, sharks can live for 272 to 512 years.

It was named after the Chinese Ming dynasty, which was in power when it was alive. Ming was unfortunately killed by researchers when they opened its shell to find out how old it was. The unlucky mollusc was picked up from an Icelandic seabed back in 2006, but scientists were unaware of the creature's record breaking age.

One of the ways scientists have discovered bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) can live up to two centuries is by analyzing stone harpoon tips discovered in their blubber. In northern Alaska, biologists who collaborate with local whalers have discovered embedded harpoon tips that are thought to date from the 1890s. Additionally, after examining the eye tissue from a group of bowhead whales, researchers came to the conclusion that one of the creatures had been alive for 211 years before it passed away.

He's lived through two world wars, eight British monarchs and 40 U.S. presidents. His lifetime has seen the first phone call (1876), the first skyscraper (1885), the first power-driven flight (1903), the first people to walk on the moon (1969).
He was alive when the first photograph of a person was taken (1838); now he poses for selfies with adoring tourists. He was born before the creation of the postage stamp (1840), and now appears on them.
One of the 14 species of baleen whales, bowheads are named after the high bow-like curvature of their lips. They are the only baleen whale species that spend the entire year in the Arctic.
