Katie Shiner: This photo looks like it is straight out of a National Geographic Magazine and it makes me want to learn more about frogs. The positioning of the frog and the shadow on the leaf gives the perfect contrast and edge the photo needs.

Colin Murphy: This photo is giving me "creepy" energy and I can't stop looking at it. After hearing that this photo is a picture of the student who contorted the image to create a sense of mystery and darkness, I was very impressed.

Why do we celebrate Black History Month?

Popular Black History figures

People celebrate Black History Month so everyone can acknowledge African Americans. It honors all Black people from all periods of the U.S. history, from the enslaved people first brought over from Africa in the early 17th century to African Americans living in the United States today.

Rosa Parks

Rosa Parks was an American activist in the civil rights movement best known for her pivotal role in the Montgomery bus boycott. On December 1, 1955 Rosa Parks sat in the front of a bus even though the back of th bus was designated for African Americans. Since the bus started to fill up with white passengers the bus driver asked Rosa Parks to move She refused. Her resistance set in motion one of the largest social movements in history, the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

Who Started Black History Month?

Black History Month was created by an African American named Carter G. Woodson. Carter G. Woodson was born in December 19th, 1875 in New Canton, VA and was a teacher and a school principal before obtaining a bachelor's degree in literature from Berea College in Kentucky, but sadly at the age of only 74 died of a heart attack in 1950.

James Baldwin

James Baldwin was a writer and civil rights activist. James Baldwin wrote eloquently, thoughtfully, and passionately on the subject of race in America in novels, essays, and plays .James Baldwin raised public awareness of racial and sexual oppression.

Frederick Douglass

Frederick Douglass was a formerly enslaved man who became a prominent activist, author and public speaker. Fredrick Douglass recruited African-American men to fight int he U.S Army, including two of his own sons, who served in the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.

Jackie Robinson

Jackie Robinson was an African American professional baseball player. On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson became the first African american to play Major League Baseball in the modern era. Jackie broke Major Leagues Baseball's infamous"color barrier" when he started at the first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers, Until then professional ballplayers of color suited up for teams only in the Black Leagues.

On Thursday afternoon there was an assembly that included the elective classes:career, Gsota news(media), and journalism. The reason for the assembly was because of Mrs.Gigele's mother Mrs.Ryan who is a widely known Supervising Producer. She was on the set of National Geographic. Animal Planet and more.

One of the many requirements of Tv Producing is that everything has to be fact checked and proved.

"Are you smarter than a 5th grader" is a game hosted by Jeff Foxworthy and produced by Mark Burnett. The game show tested people if they can answer 5th grade questions and that is what I wanted to find out here at GSOTA.

So far I have done "8th grader vs 8th grader", "8th grader vs 7th grader", "7th vs two other 7th graders" and this time I wanted to turn it up to the max. This time it will be a teacher vs two past 8th grade winners.

Contestants
Today we have, one of the middle school ELA teachers and a winner from my last week magazine page, Ms. Axelrad and two past 8th grade winners on "Are you smarter than a 5th grader" Cayla and Bradley.

Bradley and Cayla thought it was going to be easy because they both have won before and there were two of them. Ms. Axelrad thought she was going to lose because she has not been in 5th grade in (quoted by Ms. Axelrad) many many many years.

Results
Well I know for a fact that Ms. Axelrad, Bradley, and Cayla are all smarter than a 5th grader but there can be only one winner/duo. The winner of "Are you smarter than a 5th grader" is Ms. Axelrad with 8 out of 9 and Bradley/Cayla with 7 out of 9. This was so close because I had to add a tie-breaker ( the 9th question) because they tied on the first 8 questions.

Michael Jackson

February is Black History Month. Michael Jackson broke a number of barriers for Black Americans including being the first Black artist to have a video in regular rotation on MTV, the first Black global pop icon who will forever be the King of Pop, by setting and breaking sales records throughout his career, including the long-established record for the biggest selling album of all time for Thriller, and being recognized for his unparalleled philanthropic endeavors. Michael is an American icon that pushed the envelope for the Black community worldwide.

Whitney Houston

Spanning the month of February, Black History Month celebrates the achievements of African Americans. Whitney Houston’s impact on the music industry was monumental. She paved the way for many artists and is still regarded as one of the most influential singers ever. Houston continues to inspire millions with her music even years after her passing. Houston was born in 1963, in Newark, New Jersey with her parents Cissy and John Russell Houston. Houston discovered a passion for music at an early age. Her mother was an accomplished gospel and soul singer who was also the choir minister at New Hope Baptist Church.

Beyonce Giselle Knowles

Beyoncé's ongoing and uplifting and also celebrating the Black community has become a key part of her legacy. In 2018, Beyoncé headlined Coachella, becoming the first ever Black woman artist to headline in the festival. She used the history making moment as a platform to celebrate Black culture, inviting performers from historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) to the Coachella stage and mixing in vocal snippets of Black icons like Malcolm X and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Her 2020 GRAMMY-nominated music film, Black Is King, is a "love letter" to Black men. The film is the visual counterpart to The Lion King: The Gift, a 2019 soundtrack album curated by Beyoncé that spotlights African and Afrobeats artists like Wizkid, Burna Boy, Mr Eazi and many others

The History Of Black Music

Black music started to reflect urban environments through amplified sounds, social concerns, and cultural pride expressed through music. It combined blues, jazz, boogie-woogie and gospel taking the form of fast paced dance music with highly energized guitar work appealing to young audiences across racial divides.How did Black music originate? The music of African Americans can be traced back to the days of slavery. In the fields as slaves were working you could hear them singing songs to pass the time. These songs were a way for them to share their life stories.

Was there a real King Arthur?!

The story of King has been told from ear to ear, thousands of years ago. Camelot, a group of knights, the magic sword excalibur, and the wizard Merlin are also included in this famous tale. However, the tale of king arthur seems to have a little bit of things that aren't true. If this story was true, then it would most likely be less magical. There are a number of sites that link to the tale, like Tintagel, a coastal site that was supposedly told to be Arthur's Home. But reasons have no evidence to say that was his home or even existed.The stories have changed over the past centuries so we don't know the exact original of the old tale. And there weren't any artifacts of any papers or journals of the story found. We could say that this story was thought to be a reality and was taken seriously as part of history OR was maybe anything but a story. BUT Hey ,That's Just a Theory, A History Theory!

The Bernie Mac show is a old school show that came out in 2001 to 2006 was a show about a comedian dad and his 3 kids that he adopted, the show went on many years and bernie also did many other shows and even made 2 books. Larry Wilmore was the producer of the show but was also a comedian, writer and producer, and he has been working for more than 25 years. Larry has many interesting shows and is now hosting his own show called "Black on the Air"

Moesha is a show that was released in 1996 to 2001, the show was based on a character specifically a teenager named moesha trying to balance school, friendship, and her love life. the director Stan Lathan is a television producer and a director. Stan Lathan first started his career at the PBS station on the show " Say Brother", he also produced Gridlock'd and How To Be A Player.

The black panther is a Disney+ movie that came out in theaters on February, 16, 2017. The director of the famous movie "Ryan Coogler" has directed many movies along with the second movie " Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" Ryan directed many other famous movies and is also known to have many movies with the Famous Michael B. Jordan. Ryan started studying at University of Southern California, and from there he decided to make his first film.

The proud family is a movie created by Bruce W. Smith and Ralph Farquhar the show originated on disney channel in 2001 to 2005 the services the original show ended about 15 years ago but now the show has come back with a new name "The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder". One of the producers Bruce W. Smith is also a director, and a television producer who also animated in one of disney's famous movies "The Princess And The Frog". The other producer Ralph Farquhar is also a writer and wrote many other movies.

Indian Leopard

Zebra

The Indian leopard is a leopard subspecies widely distributed on the Indian subcontinent. The species Panthera pardus is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List because populations have declined. Indian leopards are carnivores which means they eat strictly meat. The things they eat include Baboons, hares, rodents, birds, lizards, porcupines, warthogs, fish, and dung beetles. Currently leopards exist only in fragmented populations in India. They are the most elusive big cat, stealthy in their habits and primarily nocturnal. Their secretive nature has made it difficult to study them in the wild, and not much is known of their behavior. Unlike most cats, leopards are strong swimmers and are one of the few cats that like water, although they are not as aquatic as tigers. Overall they are very unique and interesting animals that live in an beautiful atmosphere.

Zebras are African equines with distinctive black-and-white striped coats. There are three living species: the Grévy's zebra, plains zebra, and the mountain zebra. Zebras share the genus Equus with horses and asses, the three groups being the only living members of the family Equidae. Zebras are herbivores which means they eat vegetation. A zebras diet consist of a wide variety of different grasses, sometimes even eating leaves and young trees. Their stripes perhaps serve to dazzle and confuse predators and biting insects, or to control the animal's body heat. Because each individual's stripes are unique, their stripes may also have a social purpose, helping zebras to recognise one other. Zebras have amazing eyesight and are some of the few mammals that can actually see colour. The only colour they can't see is orange. When zebras greet each other, they will stick their ears straight up and push their faces forward. However, when they are frightened, their ears push forward, and when they are angry, their ears pull backward. Zebras are cute unique animals with amazing stripes and a ray of emotions.
