This art piece was made by Stella Rappleye. We interviewed some students to ask them how they felt about Stella's drawing and what are some things that they would change about it, and what is something they like about it. The first student we Interviewed was Isabela Blanco said, "It makes me feel like the girl in the drawing is kind and a good person". When we asked her what would be something she would change about the drawing, she replied saying the only thing she would change would be the hair but other than that she liked everything about the drawing.

This art piece was made by Ayanna Dunbar. We interviewed some students to ask them how they felt about Ayanna's drawing and what are some things that they would change about it, and what is something they like about it. Isabella said that she likes the drawing and the only thing she would change about it would be how big the eyes are and the thing she likes most about the drawing is the hair.

This piece of art was made by Cayla Cooper. We interviewed some students to ask them how they felt about Cayla's drawing and what are some things that they would change about it, and what is something they like about it. The first student we Interviewed was Isabela Blanco said she really likes it, but she feels a bit sad when she sees the piece. Isabela said there isn't anything she would change about it and her favorite part about the drawing is the girl that has her hair down on the left side of the piece.

How To Help With Stress

Stress can be very hard to deal with especially when in school with classwork and homework but some ways to help with stress in school is to keep a journal, getting plenty of exercise, eating healthy, regular meals, making sure you get enough sleep, and meditating.

Downloading an app that provides relaxation exercises (such as deep breathing or visualization) or tips for practicing mindfulness. According to verywellfamily.com, "Concerns about not having enough friends, not being in the same class as friends, not being able to keep up with friends in one particular area or another, interpersonal conflicts, and peer pressure are a few of the very common ways kids can be stressed by their social lives at school."

School can cause a lot of stress and anxiety but taking 5 breaths can also calm people down. Stress can be a problem for student's focus and motivation.

According to jedfoundation.org, "Research shows that feeling overwhelming school-related stress actually reduces your motivation to do the work, impacts your overall academic achievement, and increases your odds of dropping out. Stress can also cause health problems such as depression, poor sleep, and anxiety." According to burkhartdental.com the scientific reason for stress is, "A stressful event creates a release of hormones, called cortisol, by the hypothalamus through the adrenal glands into the bloodstream. Your blood sugar increases, adrenaline causes a more rapid heart rate and oxygen fills your muscles creating tension."

I interviewed Destiny Reyes (A GSOTA Student) asking her what she gets stressed from and she said that she has stress from school and peer pressure. So, stress from school can come from actual classwork and from their peers. It is important students have a safe way to release the stress in a healthy way.

The Art of Poetry

It hangs on its
             stem like a plum
at the edge of a
             darkening thicket.

It’s swelling and
             blushing and ripe
and I reach out a
             hand to pick it

but flesh moves
             slow through time
and evening
             comes on fast

and just when I
             think my fingers
might seize that
             sweetness at last

the gentlest of
             breezes rises
and the plum lets
             go of the stem.

And now it’s my
             fingers ripening
and evening that’s
             reaching for them.

How does it make you feel?

What does it mean?

The poem "The Day" is supposed to be talking about the cycle of life as an average day like any other person in this world. It also talks about the passing of time. For example, in the poem it talks about the passing of seasons and mortality meaning time is passing from minutes to hours to days to weeks to months and finally years. Brock's simply addresses that the idea of time is the reason that's preventing ones from gaining the items we desired.

The poem is supposed to relate to the reader of a calm, nice perfect day that anyone else has. Giving that you imagine yourself on a perfect day is supposed to make you happy to think. At, the end of the poem it tells the sadness of how the day ends which will bring you sadness, sorrow that your perfect day is over, and it will never be different tomorrow.

Welcome to Booming Businesses! This section features two businesses and jobs every week that are of high demand in 2023. There will be a brief amount of info about the job. Speaking of booming businesses, here are a couple of in-demand business and finance jobs to examine.

Financial Manager

Financial Managers perform data analysis, advise on profit-maximizing ideas, and are responsible for the financial well-being of an organization. This job outlook has a 17% growth rate within the decade 2021-2031, according to BLS.

Actuaries analyze the financial costs of risk and uncertainty. They help measure the probability and risk of future events using mathematics, statistics, and financial theory. This job outlook has a 21% growth rate from 2021-2031, as reported by BLS.

Requirements: bachelor's degree in finance, economics, accounting, or business, and typically need at least five years of experience in finance-related positions, such as a financial analyst or accountant.

Rock Bands

The Smiths
The members of The Smiths are Morrissey (the singer), Johnny Marr (the guitarist), Andy Rourke (the bassist), Mike Joyce, (the drummer). There was originally 6 members but 2 left because of drama in the group about other members. Their first song was Hand in Glove, which was also their first hit song. Although, their most popular song was "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" Their genre of music is Indie rock jangle pop post-punk alternative rock. All of their music is about nostalgia, guilt, repression and a scab pulling adolescence.

Nirvana

The beatles

There were originally more members than they have which they call the survived members of Nirvana, Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear.

Their first single hit song was "Love Buzz", but their first big most successful hit is "Smells Like Teen Spirit". That song came up because someone wrote a graffiti on a wall of Kurt Cobain's hotel room which he is no longer a member but the message was "Kurt smells like teen spirit" referencing a deodorant brand.

They are still currently popular and influencing other bands.

The Beatles were another popular rock band who influenced many other bands, the four original members were John, Paul, George and Ringo. They were most popular in the time 1960s-1970s. Their first song was "Love Me Do" Their song "I Want to Hold Your Hand" which made it to the billboard hot 100. Which was in the "Meet the Beatles!" Album.

The Beatles broke up on August 27th of 1967 because of their managers death, because he played a major role in their lives.

Instagram originated with Stanford graduate Kevin Systrom, who had previously worked at Google. His initial creation was called Burbn, Burbn was chosen as the name because of his interest in whiskey and bourbon. Inspired by the popularity of Foursquare and other location-based platforms, Burbn allowed users to post check-ins along with photos, which were not yet a staple of social posting. It wasn’t long until we saw the first iteration of a now near ubiquitous company. In February 2004, The Facebook was launched. It had a profile where you could upload a photo, share your interests, and connect with other people. It also offered a network visualization of your connections.

On February 4, 2004, a Harvard sophomore named Mark Zuckerberg, launched 'The Facebook', a social media website he had built in order to connect Harvard students with one another. By the next day, over a thousand people had registered, and that was only the beginning. Now known simply as Facebook, the site quickly ballooned into one of the most significant social media companies in history. Today, Facebook is one of the most valuable companies in the world, with over 2 billion monthly active users.

WhatsApp was founded in 2004 by former Yahoo! employees, Brian Acton and Jan Koum. Koum in particular envisioned an app where a list of names in an address book could have individual statuses. Koum spent much of 2009 writing the backend code for WhatsApp and spent many tedious hours adjusting it for the nuances of international dialing prefixes. In October 2009, Acton persuaded five of his former Yahoo! colleagues to provide $250,000 in seed funding. One month later, the app was launched in the App Store. Koum and Acton would work for free for the next few years, sharing an unmarked building with Evernote and wearing blankets in the winter for warmth. WhatsApp then became a paid service, ostensibly to limit growth but also to cover mounting operational costs. Just two years later, it was firmly entrenched in the top twenty apps in the U.S. App Store.

YouTube was originally created as a platform for anyone to post any video content they desired. It was hoped that users could use the site to upload, share, and view content without restriction. It has since grown to become one of the foremost video distribution sites in the world. Today, many content creators make a decent living by selling ad space before or on videos they create and upload onto the site. Thanks to things like YouTube's Partner Program and Google's AdSense, a few people can actually create successful careers as YouTubers. YouTube was founded on Valentine's Day in 2005. The platform, like so many others in Silicon Valley, began as an angel-funded enterprise with makeshift offices in a garage.

The History Behind Labrador Retriever

The Labrador breed dates back all the way to at least the 1830s, when St. John's water dogs bred by European settlers in Newfoundland, were first introduced to Britain from ships trading between Canada and Poole in Dorset. These were then bred with British hunting dogs to create what became known as the Labrador Retriever. Now they are number 1 dog in the world owned by more than 98,000 people in the world.

Staff Member of The Week

You are very appreciated, Mr. Rodney!

Here at GSOTA, we have a lot of staff members that are underappreciated and need a shout out, so we will give them one.

The staff member of the week is Mr. Rodney. He is a maintenance worker here at GSOTA and does things like helping the plumbing, picking up trash around the school, and fixing the AC. He has been working here for 6 years now. He said he likes everything about this school including the students and teachers, he also said his job is easy and has no challenges with it. He also said that he likes working with the kids and feeding the cats.
