The Buick Motor Division History

Buick Motor Division is the oldest American car company. It served as the ground for one of the biggest car manufacturers in the world – the General Motors Corporation. The number of Buick lease deals proves that this brand remains popular timelessly. The history of Buick began in 1899. Its founder, David Dunbar Buick, came from the Scottish immigrant family. He maintained a successful plumbing business and got interested in cars when he was already 45. His main interest was the internal combustion engine.

Buick got so excited about it that forgot about his business. Naturally, his companion, William Sherwood, was not satisfied by such state of things and the tension between the partners grew. At last, Buick sold his part to Sherwood for the enormous price and fully devoted himself to his new hobby.

Enough money and free time – why not make it a profit? Buick organized a company that specialized on the elaboration, production and sales of the engines for vehicles for the agriculture use. Buick found a genius engineer, Walter Marr, who was not interested in agricultural vehicles, but wished to make cars. Their relationships were complicated; two strong characters were difficult to get along. Marr left and came back several times. Still, they managed to create two vehicles, in 1899 and in 1900. Nevertheless, in 1901, Marr leaves for good and starts his own company, and Buick reorganizes his own one.

Eugene Richard, that replaced Marr, receives a patent for the legendary overhead valve constructed by his predecessor. This type of engine became the most important achievement in the history of the motor construction. The auto manufacturer use this construction even nowadays. It received the more compact combustion camera than the engines of similar volume. In addition, he was able to burn fuel faster and developed more horsepower.

But then the company faced financial difficulties and Buick asked his friend and sheet-metal provider Benjamin Briscoe for a credit. Briscoe demanded majority shareholding for financing the company. He became its owner and reorganized a company once again. The financial now allowed producing new vehicles. Sixteen of them were produced and sold in 1903. Buick became a manager and hired Marr once again.

Since then Buick company changed several owners. The General Motors Company as it is, occurred in 1908. It became the greatest manufacturer in the USA. It went through many difficult times, but against all odds became a leader of the American automotive industry. The Buick vehicles have the status of the premium segment cars for more than 100 years. Every new company’s model meets the demands of every changing generation.

Though Buick does not have the luxury glare of the Cadillac, it stays the signature automobile brand that represents the American car quality. Though Buicks are a vehicle of the premium segment, nowadays auto market gives people many possibilities.
