Introduction
Jamestown: A History
With book creator
The first permanent English colony in North America was founded in 1607 at Jamestown, Virginia. King James I of England financed an expedition of 144 men (105 settlers and 39 crewmen) to travel to this location aboard three ships named the Susan Constant, the Godspeed, and the Discovery. On one of these ships was a guy by the name of John Smith. He, along with other crew were to select a site to build a fort. The settlers explored the coast and picked an island spot that could be easily defended if they were attacked by the local natives. They named the new settlement Jamestown after King James I.
Choosing the site
When the English settlers found Jamestown on a narrow Peninsula boarded on the 3 sides of the James river, they reasoned that it would be a great place to build a fort. Today, Jamestown is located on an island because the peninsula has eroded. (washed away)
