If I were a penguin

Chapter I

My name is Addy, which means, “nobel” and I live in Antarctica with my family.
Antarctica is a continent but you already knew that, right? It is a continent surrounded by oceans.

Antarctica means “anti-arctic”. The Arctic, being in the north pole and Antarctica in the south pole.
This Continent is the driest, the highest, the windiest and the coldest of all continents on Earth. Because of its extreme climate, my body is very well prepared to survive!

As I am a very curious penguin, I am always looking for ways to increase my knowledge of the world.
One day on one of my walks, I encountered a strange construction and strange beings who looked very different from me. So I went to talk to them and they explained they were researching and investigating things from their remote past because it was very important to them.
Then they said something about the glaciers but I didn’t understand at the time.

So, next morning, I got up early and took off to find out what was going on.
After a few hours, I saw the saddest and most depressing thing ever: our glaciers breaking and melting down helpless into the ocean.
Why was this happening?
I’m about to find out!

Chapter II

Here I am... Ready to write my diary!
Today is a great day for me! I have a new friend! My friend is a white shark and his name is "Ark"!!
Ark was traveling through the ocean exploring new places when we met.

We are different from each other, but I find it very interesting!! Ark prefers to live alone, I prefer to live with my family, though he is welcome to Antarctica anytime!!

I was talking to Ark about the ice melting and the changes that we have been facing recently… We've decided to search for the reasons and to act upon, in order to stop the damage.
All united we can protect our environment!

Chapter III

We've decided to ask the elephant seal for help. His name is Noah. He is an aquatic mammal and belongs to the Phocidae family.
Noah and his relatives have this name, because of the shape of their nose, which is similar to an elephant's trunk. The body is made up of a thick layer of fat that serves to protect them from the cold. They do not have ears, which distinguishes them from lions, sea lions and seals. The females do not have a trunk but a small rounded snout.
We've explained to Noah what was happening with the environment and he immediately agreed to help us.

Chapter IV

The animals (penguins, sharks and marine elephants) did a research work and discovered that besides the melting down of the glaciers, which was destroying their natural habitat (home), the ocean was being polluted with plastic objects. The animals confused this with food and ate the plastic. Their stomachs soon were full of this plastic, causing them to die. At this point, the animals realized that they needed “real” help so they decided to get in touch with scientists who were studying Antarctica.
Scientists could help save the animals and the planet…

Chapter V

Addy and his entire colony together with Ark and Noah, decided to share their concerns about the destruction of their habitat with the team of marine biologists from Portugal and other countries, investigating in Antarctica.
In a meeting, they've discussed and found several solutions.
Firstly, experts will hold awareness sessions in schools across planet Earth. In this way, they want to motivate children and adults to reduce, reuse and recycle packaging every day.
And what will the animals do? How will they help biologists to save the planet?

Chapter VI

The animals came together to decide what to do. Helping planet Earth has become a great mission! Together they decided to work together with humans and collect as much garbage as possible. The penguins got to work! As they are very fast in the water, they picked up a lot of garbage from the bottom of the sea.

Sharks sent a message to humans: "SOS! Save the environment!” The seals, with their vocalizations, warned all other animals. With all these appeals, human beings understood it was urgent to help our planet!

Chapter VII

The Adelia penguin decided to tell a little of her history. Her name was in honor of the wife of the discoverer of the species. Her life was threatened due to climate change, with rising temperatures and food shortages. She said her species like to eat Krill, a specific shrimp that serve as food for many species living in Antarctica.

Many of us live on Ross Island, a land within easy reach of the sea. We are in love with each other and we like to conquer our partners with pebbles and we fight with those who steal them because we build our nests with them. This is how we courtship.

Our parents work in pairs, sharing the work of caring for us. I just ask you to help us so that the planet doesn't heat up anymore. Do your part.
