Disruption!

HTH welcomes visitors because, they are trying to help people understand what exactly they do, and how they do it. It’s also a good way of making people more aware of it so that its at the point where HTH is known in more places by more people. Lastly it is also a good way of showing off there work. 

This is a interview that I turned into a podcast at HTH. It was a bit of a challenge as there were planes flying overhead and kids playing dodgeball the whole time.

High Tech High was really eye opening for me. Their style of learning is just very different from anything else I have ever seen or heard of. One thing that I did see that I had seen before in there style of teaching is, PBL. PBL is growing and becoming way more popular, to the point where it is fairly easy to find in other schools. However, thats not what makes HTH different from other schools. HTH’s main goal is to get their students ready for the real world. One of the ways they do that is by giving them lots of responsibility. I noticed while I was there that the students opinions were treated the same as if they were coming from a teacher, same attentiveness in listening and same respect. One of the most important things I noticed that set the school apart from most other schools is the fact that the students were very focused people. Almost every student was very focused on one general goal, and that is to produce great results. Sure they are teenagers who goof around and laugh from time to time, but for the most part they were paying attention all of the time, and focusing on there work in class so they could succeed. The reason why it is that way is the fact that it is fair ally difficult to get into the school, and most of the people who are in the school not that it is a privilege to be in the school. The ones that understand that, take advantage of their opportunity to produce better work. I already think that PLP is fairly similar to HTH, but I think that most of the students at HTH are more focused, and I think that if I could be a little bit more focused in my classes I could produce much better work. 

Aircraft Carriers completely revolutionized naval warfare. They disrupted the world in more than one way. They were mainly used in the military as a huge weapon. They extended the range of normal guns on battleships, which was about 15 miles, to having jets that can go hundreds of miles. They are used for mainly attacking but they also helped a lot with scouting as they had planes that could see on radar for hundreds of miles away and can tell if they are friend or fo. Aircraft carriers are also used in the political sense as they are almost like a country flexing a muscle if they are deployed, which is a great way to intimidate opposing nations.  

Intel is best known for its microprocessing chips. This was disruptive because it is a vital part of the computer. Without the microprocessor our lives would be completely different.

In this video I was meant to explain what that computer was and why it was significant, but I later learned in the computer history museum that most of what I had said was false. 

Working on an Aircraft Carrier would be a pretty cool job. I would do it but I would like to be an officer of some sort like, combat systems engineer, or marine systems engineer, something along those lines. I have lived on a smaller ship for about a week, and it was really cool, but I have heard from more than one source it is like prison, because there is almost nothing to do when your not working besides going to the gym. In my opinion it would be a really cool experience, and I am slightly open to the idea even though the food and beds aren’t good. Wait there is only one problem, for me to do this, Canada would actually have to have a Aircraft Carrier. 

This is a picture of Janice Joplins house. It is significant because she pioneered for women and changed how people viewed women back in the 60’s.

Mission Dolores Park, has lots of history as it has the monument of Miguel Hidalgo, who is known as the Father of Mexican Independence, because after 300 years of being dominated Spain it was finally liberated, with the help of Miguel Hidalgo who was a priest and a leader of the mexican war of independence. 

This is a picture of the first “gaybourhood”, as San Francisco was the first area to accept people for being gay, and being proud of it. 

Cabrillo was a maritime explorer from Spain, who explored the up and down the west coast of the United States. San Diego Bay was the first place that a European had set foot on what we now call the west coast of the United States.

An activity like a hot air balloon ride, are improtant to zoo’s because they make more people want to go to zoo’s and they show that they actually give the animals lots of space.

Supposed to be acting like a lemur like my friends but I had no clue what was going on.

We were not able to film in apple in apple because of their new ideas. They did not want their new ideas getting out as other company’s could steal them and foil apples plans.

I took this photo in a hot air balloon at the San Diego Zoo safari park. Going up in a hot air balloon was one of the many things we did that day. 

Before the trip to the safari park I had not been empathetic towards the zoos. Now that I have put myself in their shoes I have realized that they have good intentions. They are actually making good progress when it comes to stopping animals from going extinct. They have disrupted how the animals live, and they have less space at the zoo but it is a safer area for them and they have people looking after them all day.  In my opinion it is overall beneficial for thsoe particular species. 

On the first day my class and I woke up very early and met at the airport at 4:30am. That was obviously the least thing that I had looked forward to about the trip. This day was fairly relaxed, as we were all tired from the plane but we still ended up going to Torrey Pines National Reserve. 

Old town San Diego is known as the birth place of California. It is called that as it is the site of the first permanent Spanish settlement in California, which happened in 1769. Although that was when the Spanish got there, the First Nations for more than 9000 years. 

Before we went to Silicon Valley, I had a general idea of how everything was getting disrupted. To be honest before we started this unit I knew nothing about this area in California. Of course I knew about the Companies like Microsoft and Apple, but I didn’t know about how they effected the world. My eyes were opened wide, I now understand how much one idea can change the world. I also have learned that generally if you want to develop an Idea that is going to disrupt the world, you should go to Silicon Valley, because that is the place where world changing ideas start, as the resources and the environment of Silicon Valley produce that. I won’t change my definition of disruption, but I will change my perspective on it. Before I mainly thought of disruption as something that is more physical than anything, now I think it can be in many different forms, from physical to mental, and everything in between. Everything that changes the world is a disruption now matter what it is, as it has disrupted the incumbent. I now look at things completely new way now that I have been to Silicon Valley, you could even say that going there disrupted my worldview. 

Google is best known for its search engine. It is disruptive because it has basically made library’s and books obsolete as it takes almost all of the information in books and puts it in one convenient place.

Stanford is a university that is different from most. Most university’s will look at what your percentage was for each class. Stanford is different, they pay more attention to what your passionate about, and what you do outside of school. They look to see what kind fo person you are, they like to see somebody who is a unique hard working person, that doesn’t try to only coast through school. They also have an amazing sense of tradition, as they basically completely change their school just for there special sporting events. They will even go to the extent of changing the colour of the to red. One very unique part of stanford is that you can change your major when ever you want as many times as you want. You can even change it if you just changed it the other day. They also have a very diverse bunch of people, as they have people with various backgrounds. One of the most amazing things Stanford has done is create a school that is known for its academics and athletics. They actually have one over 244 medals in the olympics since 1908.  The result of Stanford being this way has made it one of the most incredible schools on the planet.

Disruption: <br/>Something that interrupts a current process, object or movement.

The main topic of this field school is disruption, and there has to be a specific reason why we went to California to learn about disruption. The reason why we went to California is because it has many different amazing examples of disruption whether they are good or bad. For example the USS Midway disrupting naval warfare, and all of the giant tech company’s like google and apple, which have changed our world forever. 

My Name is Ethan Dennis.  I live in North Vancouver Canada with two dogs, two half brothers that now live on their own, and two lovely parents. I am currently in grade 10 at Seycove Secondary. At that school they have a program called Performance Learning Program (PLP). I am currently in that program and I hope to graduate in that program. I most enjoy hanging out with friends and joking around. 

Meeting these new people helped better shape my worldview as it gave me a perspective I have never seen before. I learned about how some people it was quite simple and it wasn’t that hard to get into HTH, and then others who tried for six years straight. Some people lived right next to HTH others had to trek for 3 hours to get to it. I learned that HTH is one of the most diverse schools I have ever seen before, as it has many different types of people with different goals and personalities. I also learned that most of the people who were there were very dedicated people as they were very focused on their work and their goals for the future. The most interesting thing I learned though was different it was, just some of the small things like calling teachers by their first name, because if I did that teachers would generally be upset with me. 

I was amazed at how progressive everything was in Silicon Valley, and the fact that its going to shape what happens in the future. It shows that there is going to be infinite possibilities and how technology is changing everything and how we live. One example is war, the reason why I say that is because, it constantly is changing and has changed immensely and we have no clue what it is going to look like in 20 years. Another example is all of the companies in Silicon Valley, and how they have changed the world. For example, Apple and Microsoft have given us personal computers, which is something people use everyday, and we are just waiting for them next person with an idea to come along to change the world again, and who knows how many big ideas will be developed in the next 20 years. The pace of everything is increase as well. Everything is changing at a faster and faster rate, with new phones, computers you name it coming almost all the time. Before you know it we might actually have robots walking around flying cars. We might even see a recreation of how apple and Microsoft started with some people with an idea who are determined to make it work. Even though people are constantly telling them that they can’t. If we see that happen again, we will have a huge change again. I mainly learned that you can do just about anything in this world, and in the future it is most likely just going to be easier to do anything. Now that I know that you can do just about anything, I have set my goals a little bit higher than they originally were, and if I accomplish that goal, I will know for sure that you can do or be anything you want.

One of the worst sounds that an inmate on Alcatraz could here wouldn’t come from inside the prison, or even on the same island, The sound would come from across the bay. That sound is the laughter from the civilians having fun. It’s just a huge tease for the prisoners as they have a very small taste of what life is like on the other side, and it just makes them want more and more of it. The sound just makes them want to be free again. It probably drove people insane, as it was like dangling there freedom in front of them but, it was just out of reach. 

  The computer history museum was one of my favourite parts of the trip mainly because it showed such a rich history of how computers have progressed. Before I went on that trip I never knew that computers started out the way they did. The oldest computer we saw wasn’t really much of a computer, it was more of a mechanical machine that printed things out. It was also very interesting to see how computers got a lot simpler to fix, for example in the older computers if something broke you wouldn’t be sure where until you went through basically the whole machine. There was also a reoccurring theme going throughout the tour that we took, they generally got smaller in size as we went through. It just shows that computers are going to continue to get smaller as thats going to make them more convenient for people. This museum itself is quite amazing as I believe that no other computer museum can compete with them as they have so much physical evidence of the past. It does an amazing job of displaying how computers have changed through the years, as they have gone from giant mainframe computers that take up a whole room and then moving onto having a personal computers in every home which people never thought would happen. This museum is also something that is disruptive as it is quite eye opening for somebody my age. It shows what life was like before I was born, as everything is so much more advanced in just the span of a few decades. It really makes you think what is going to come next, what else are we really capable of.
