Up On the Clouds

Hi, my name is Noah. I’m 13 years old. I have bright green eyes, wavy blonde hair, and my favorite color is green. Now that I have introduced myself, let me tell you a story - a real story I was in, myself.

Before I get into the details, let me tell you, this story will show you what it’s like above the clouds. There will be a King, a Queen, a whole kingdom of elves, and drama! Let’s get started!

It was finally summer break and it was Friday, my favorite day of the week! The day started off as it always did. I got out of bed, changed my clothes, and then I went to eat my breakfast. After breakfast, I wanted to eat some fruits and vegetables, but when I opened the fridge, it was almost empty! We were running out of groceries in the refrigerator. This was not good. I loved to eat fruits and vegetables, so I needed more. I called to tell my parents about it and they allowed me to go buy some groceries at the nearest grocery store. But that was when the day got strange.

When I went inside the grocery store, I noticed some unusual things. The apples were smaller than usual and the peppers were all types of colors like purple, blue, and orange. The bananas were an oval shape, and the cabbages looked like mushrooms! This certainly wasn’t normal, but no one else seemed to notice or say anything. Was I going crazy? I didn’t think about it more because at that exact moment my stomach rumbled like an earthquake. Because I was so hungry, I decided to just buy the weird looking fruits and vegetables and left the grocery store.

After I got home, I decided to wash the odd looking fruits and vegetables. As if the day wasn’t already weird enough, it got even stranger.

“TEEHEE TEEHEE TEEHEE!”

Where was that giggling coming from? I was the only one home, and it definitely wasn’t me. I leaned in, listened closely, and realized it came from the fruits and vegetables I'd bought at the store! I was so shocked I stopped washing them!

Suddenly, there was a flash of light and the fruits and vegetables turned into tiny little elves. I couldn’t believe my eyes! They were still fruits and vegetables but... ALIVE! They were fruit and vegetable elves! At this point, I was sure I had lost my mind. Fruits and vegetables turning into elves?

Then I heard knocking at the door. Whew! I thought I'd finally be able to tell someone about all the strange things going on. But unfortunately, that didn't happen... When I answered the door, I saw a bunch more elves instead!

Before I had a chance to say anything the elves pushed me out of the door and stacked themselves on top of each other, with me on top of the whole pile, until we were above the clouds.

When they finally put me down, I said, “Hey, you elves, what’s going on here? You just kidnapped me from my own house!” But they ignored me and scattered away on top of the clouds.

Since I wasn't going to get an answer from them, I decided to explore instead. I was so surprised that I was in the sky and able to stand on the clouds there. When I looked around, there was a big kingdom right in front of me. This kingdom was made out of fruits and vegetables! The houses, the living things around me (including other elves), and even the enormous castle were all made out of groceries!

This went against everything I knew. A kingdom on the clouds?

But I was curious so I decided to go check it out and have even more of an adventure by exploring this place on top of the clouds. After all, it was summer vacation and I didn't have to worry about schoolwork.

While I was walking towards one of the village houses, another group of elves appeared and pushed me to the fruit and vegetable castle gates. Do the elves want me to go inside of the castle or something? It didn’t matter, so I just went across the moat and into the castle’s gate. When I got inside the castle, I saw two thrones. One of them was made out of fruits, and the other was made out of vegetables. Of course they were fruits and vegetables. What else would they be?

A loud voice boomed, “Ah, finally! Welcome to the Fruit and Vegetable Kingdom! I’m King Vegetable-”

“AND, I’m Queen Fruit!” Queen Fruit cut in.

I was still trying to understand what was going on, but answered, “Um...Hello. My name is Noah and-”

“Oh! We know. We all do,” the King and Queen both said at the same time.

“What?! How?! We don’t even know each other!”

“WHEEL OF HUMANS!” ordered Queen Fruit to some fruit elves.

What’s the Wheel of Humans? I wondered.

“Now, you see here? This is the Wheel of Humans. This shows everyone in the human world older than the age of 10,” Queen Fruit started.

King Vegetable continued, “When the Queen and I have a problem we can’t solve, we sometimes spin the wheel.

The person whose name comes up will then have to help us solve the problem. There will also be a small illusion only seen by them.”

“Wait, what kind of illusion?” I asked.

“Oh, it’s different every time. But this time it was to make your refrigerator have no more groceries, some fruits and veggies to look weird in the grocery shop, and for the fruits and vegetables to become elves so they could bring you up here,” the King answered.

That’s why so many things were different shapes, sizes, and colors. And that’s why no one else noticed the weird things going on.

After the talk with the King and Queen, I finally understood what the problem was. The royals kept fighting about if fruits were better or if vegetables were better. I thought that it was a dumb reason for spinning the wheel, but then again fruit and vegetable elves must think differently than humans. While I was lost in thought, I suddenly heard arguing. It was the King and Queen!

“Sir Noah, Sir Noah! The King and Queen are arguing again!” shouted some of the elf maids and butlers.

“Uh, do you know what they are fighting about?” I asked.

“They are fighting about if the fruit elves should get the new delivery or the vegetable elves should!”

“What is the delivery?” I asked.

“Every month the kingdom's tailor makes a brand new set of clothing for the King and Queen. Then we elf maids and butlers are responsible for picking them up. Before, the King and Queen always worked well together, and us fruit and vegetable elves would get the delivery together. But, now that they are arguing, no one will be able to get the delivery since the King and Queen only want to send either fruit or vegetable elves, not both.”

“Okay, Let me try handling this. -- Your majesties?... YOUR MAJESTIES PLEASE CALM DOWN! Please stop fighting!”
