Step 7: The Grand Opening! After a bit of an interruption by Covid-19, finally we were able to officially open the installation at the end of Term 2, 2020.

Step 3: Painting... ...painting... .......and more painting.....and varnishing...

Step 5: The Yr 9 students created a site plan for the poles' placement, making sure the placements aligned with the events of the Creation Myth; eg Ranginui and Papatūānuku were placed on opposite sides of the plan.

Step 6: Our kura recycles paper in exchange for native seedlings. The Yr 3/4 class planted some of these seedlings around the poles.

Once upon a time there was a teacher who had 'a bit of an idea...' ...that then took on a life of its own...

Step 4 (2020): The class now learns about the Creation Myth in more depth in their Yr 9 Social Sciences class. The pairs of students create a script for their pou character, explaining the character's role in Maori Mythology. The students record their scripts onto a site called 'Vocaroo' and the audio recording is converted and saved as a QR Code.

Our Yrs 11-13 BCATS class (Building, Construction and Allied Trades Skills) learned how to concrete the poles into the ground, gaining credits towards NCEA.

Meanwhile, I sent away the QR Codes to Danny McNeil of the Programmes, Events and Learning Team at Christchurch City Council Libraries. He laser cut them into some acrylic blocks, added the school logo, and backed them with recycled black polypropylene.

Step 1 (Term 4 2019): I wanted to do some art with my Year 7/8 Art class based on the Maori Creation Myth. I'd seen some painted fence posts at another school and thought painted posts might be an idea to explore. I bought a resource from 'Teachers Pay Teachers' called 'Maori Atua Mini Posters' made by seller 'Green Grubs'. I thought the pictures looked good for teaching painting techniques from.

Next step is to create a Kahoot Quiz that students can complete using the information from the audio recordings to answer the questions.

Step 2: I asked the local rep from Goldpine, Richmond if he had any posts he could give me. He gave thirteen poles of varying lengths for $10 each as they were seconds or damaged. The class worked in pairs to transfer the pictures onto the undercoated poles ready for painting.
