The Story of our Painted Pou
S Peacock, Murchison Area School
Once upon a time there was a teacher who had 'a bit of an idea...'
...that then took on a life of its own...
Step 1 (Term 4 2019):
I wanted to do some art with my Year 7/8 Art class based on the Maori Creation Myth.
I'd seen some painted fence posts at another school and thought painted posts might be an idea to explore.
I bought a resource from 'Teachers Pay Teachers' called
'Maori Atua Mini Posters'
made by seller
I thought the pictures looked good for teaching painting techniques from.
I asked the local rep from
if he had any posts he could give me.
He gave thirteen poles of varying lengths for $10 each as they were seconds or damaged.
The class worked in pairs to transfer the pictures onto the undercoated poles ready for painting.
.......and more painting.....and varnishing...
Lots of learning about painting techniques and colour theory.
