Ode to My Students
The eve before the first day of remote learning had my stomach in knots.
I was praying that none of you would notice,
hoping my face could remain positive,
even if I felt like spiraling down

Day 1:
"Thank God for the internet," I whisper in my head.
I saw hope in all of your eyes,
you gave me strength to persevere,
"Friends," you are so resilient!
Even through a pandemic,
you show up!
Nothing stops your thirst for learning,
I have never been more proud of you.
Day 2:
"I can't wait to do this remote learning thing," I whisper in my head.
I heard more chipper chat today,
we're going to get through this,
and my heart is full.

Day 3:
"We got this!" I say it aloud.
"Friends," you are going to change this world,
but I bet you already knew that.

Day 4:
"Being on quarantine is so isolating," I whisper in my head.
I saw your lovely faces on the screen,
I am not alone.
My "friends" are amazing!
They can do it all.
RESILIENCE

Day 5:
"Thank God for the internet," I yell before my Google Meet.
I listen and watch on the screen.
My students are game changers.
My students are compassionate.
My students are intelligent.
My students are eager.
My friends are part of a historical time in our lives.
I hope none of us take this time for granted.
You have your family, your friends, your teachers, and pets.
Enjoy each moment, even when it's tough.
I'll always cheer you on.

It's All in My Head
By: Mackenzie Warren
It’s 11 AM
As I finally wake up,
I think to myself, what if COVID-19 didn’t exist
What if some lady in China decided not to eat a raw bat
I start to think about this more as I fall back asleep
I close my eyes again
Now I’m with my grandma
Laughing at all her jokes she makes that are unintentional
Hugging her for hours
Going to the market just to get my favorite ice cream

As I close my eyes
I picture myself will all my friends,
We are all together pulling an all-nighter like we normally do on weekends
We’re laughing and putting on face masks per usual

Then I open my eyes
Why is the world like this?
Why do I want to go to school?
Why am I sad to be alone, but on any other day I just want to be alone?
Why do I want to see the people at school I don’t even want to be with?
Then I open my eyes
To my empty room
With all my 10 cups I refuse to bring downstairs
I look at my overflowing trash can full of tissues from crying
I just want to see my friends
