Ode to My Students
The eve before the first day of remote learning had my stomach in knots.
I was praying that none of you would notice,
hoping my face could remain positive,
even if I felt like spiraling down
Day 1:
"Thank God for the internet," I whisper in my head.
I saw hope in all of your eyes,
you gave me strength to persevere,
"Friends," you are so resilient!
Even through a pandemic,
you show up!
Nothing stops your thirst for learning,
I have never been more proud of you.

I listen and watch on the screen.
My students are game changers.
My students are compassionate.
My students are intelligent.
My students are eager.
My friends are part of a historical time in our lives.
I hope none of us take this time for granted.
You have your family, your friends, your teachers, and pets.
Enjoy each moment, even when it's tough.
I'll always cheer you on.

It's All in My Head

It’s 11 AM
As I finally wake up,
I think to myself, what if COVID-19 didn’t exist
What if some lady in China decided not to eat a raw bat
I start to think about this more as I fall back asleep

Now I’m with my grandma
Laughing at all her jokes she makes that are unintentional
Hugging her for hours
Going to the market just to get my favorite ice cream

I picture myself will all my friends,
We are all together pulling an all-nighter like we normally do on weekends
We’re laughing and putting on face masks per usual

I look at my overflowing trash can full of tissues from crying

The same show we have been watching for days now

I don’t want to
I don’t have that energy even though I haven’t done anything today

Call my friends and tell them how much I miss them
We are already planning what we are going to do the day we see each other

I feel like a hamster running on a wheel

Isolated..
It's not fun, being isolated inside your home.
You just get that feeling that you're gated inside a box.
You just want to escape before getting insane. Getting used to those little specks and spots you have never seen before, and you keep seeing more.
You just want to go into the fast lane.
Skip it all. But you can't.
You feel like it will never be like how it was.
When you were with friends and just..free..
but you keep going.
You obligated yourself to find something... instead of just not having a reason to get out of bed.
You keep looking, but there is nothing.
You realize how much friendship impacts your life.
Friends are the one that makes you... you.
They are people that are there for you all the time,
but now they're not.
