Memorial Day is a national holiday in the United States for honoring and remembering people who died while serving in the U.S military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of an organization of Union veterans established Decoration Day as a time for the U.S to decorate the graves of the people who died in the war with flowers. Major General John A. Logan declared that Decoration Day should be celebrated on May 30. And it is believed that the date was chosen because flowers would have bloomed all over the country. People in the U.S celebrated Decoration Day until 1966, Congress and President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a declaration to change Decoration Day to Memorial Day. By the end of the 19th century, Memorial Day ceremonies were held on May 25 throughout the nation. State legislatures passed proclamations to make Memorial Day on May 25, and the Army and Navy adopted regulations for proper observance at their facilities. However, it wasn’t until after World War I that the day was expanded to honor the men and women who died in all American wars. In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by Congress. To me, patriotism is showing kindness and happiness. You must stand up for what’s right and support your country.

What patriotism means to me?


For me patriotism is to be loyal to person and a nation. Patriotism first appeared in the early 1800’s. The word “patriotism” comes from the late Latin word “patriota” that means “countryman”.

Memorial Day is an American holiday celebrated on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died fighting in wars. Memorial Day was first called Decoration Day. That is because after the Civil War ended during spring of 1865 people in many cities would decorate the graves of soldiers who had died during the war.

At first Decoration day only celebrated soldiers who died in the civil war, but after World War I, it turned into Memorial Day because it celebrated all soldiers from all wars including: World War II, The Vientnam War, The Korean War, and Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Patriotism is being loyal to your country. For Americans, patriotism means freedom and a spirit of hope. 

What is Memorial day?-
Memorial day is when men and women mourn and celebrate the soldiers who died fighting for America. Most people place flowers on tombstones but some others have their own traditions. It is a federal holiday in the United States.

WWII-
World War Two was one of the most devastating wars in which killed 40,306 Americans and wounded 67,046 others. This war ended up costing about $360 billion dollars. This war spanned between 1941-1945 and was one of the largest wars in history.

Patriotism-
Patriotism is being loyal to your country. For Americans, patriotism means freedom and a spirit of hope.

History-
Memorial Day used to be known as Decoration Day but was changed in 1971. Twenty-five states have claimed they originated the holiday. The holiday used to be just mourning where veterans would think of there comrades and others thought of their family. Now Memorial Day is recognized as a holiday and although this day can be lively and full of cheer many still mourn for their losses and decorate graves silently. At 3:00 pm you are supposed to have a moment of silence for the fallen.

What do you think of when you think of Memorial Day? When I think of Memorial Day I think of all the great things that people did for America. Something I think of as a woman myself is Alice Paul standing up for us. Alice Paul is very important to Women history because she would turn the words of the president *at the time* and turn them around and put them against him. During World War 1, Alice still protested for the liberty of women as war happened. And after months she was arrested for “trafficking” but really she was embarrassing the president for not giving women full civil rights. Alice Paul was then tested for insanity but I don’t think so, in the end she stopped protesting and looked at women now!

Something else that reminds me of Memorial Day when it comes to history that isn’t so pleasant is the Sedition Act which happened during WW1 as well. President Wilson wouldn't let anyone speak or question his soldiers or the war. Even celebrities and famous people, if someone talked about the war it was a jail card for 20 years. Even children went to jail! During that time there was always a “chilling effect” like you were always being watched, monitored, heard. Plus, it wasn’t just the police, students thought their teachers were watching, workers were being listened to. Everyone had to be careful about what they said. Yet, of course after Wilson had his 8 years of office it ended and people weren't charged for saying something about the war. But it really is something to think about.
      Finally on a much more pleasant thought, Today, Americans celebrate what everyone did for this country. I don’t really celebrate Memorial Day but it's fun to hop in the pool and cook steak but for others they like to play games like American football, board games, (etc). Eat bunches of food like hot dogs, burgers, and popsicles in red, white, and blue. Today, Memorial Day gets VERY political, but besides that it is a great day to celebrate certain individuals of America that changed what the future would look like today. For example, without Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. intense racism and segregation would still be legal today. It is very important to remember Memorial Day!
