Pink River Dolphins

This is the largest species of river dolphin and the adult males&nbsp;can reach up to 408 lb in weight, and 8.2 ft in length. Males are larger and weigh more than females; females only grow up to a length of 7.1 ft and weigh 330 lb. Like any other toothed whale, they also have a melon ( Adipose tissue found on the forehead of toothed whales) that is used for biosonar. Their colour varies with age, newborns sport a grey colour while adults would turn pink because the skin would become thinner allowing for the capillaries to be seen.

In the meantime, they are likely to practice polyandry and polygynandry - a mating system, where both males and females have a number of mates. The breeding period occurs from October to November, while the gestation period lasts approximately 11 months. The female dolphin normally yields a single baby with an interval of up to 5 years.

The calf is nursed by its mother for about a year after birth, becoming independent within 2-3 years.

As soon as the baby is born, the mother immediately helps the youngster to come to the water surface for air.

Male dolphins are ready to mate at 7-12 years of age, whereas females start to breed when they are 6-10 years old.

   They use a wide variety of whistles and clicks as a form of communication.

          When hunting, these dolphins use the echolocation technique: they send out sounds that pass through the water, bouncing from objects, located in front of them and returning to the animal, providing information about the type, size, and speed of the potential prey.

The Amazon river dolphin, also known as the pink river dolphin or boto , lives only in freshwater. It is found throughout much of the Amazon and Orinoco river basins in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, and Venezuela.

Basically, pink dolphins eat almost anything small that swims. They eat&nbsp;around 50 species of Amazon fishes, including piranhas, tetras and croakers. &nbsp;

Turtles and crabs are also on the daily diet which consists of around 2,5% of its body weight every day.

When do we call a species endangered or threatened?

“Endangered” means a species is in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range. “Threatened” means a species is likely to become endangered within the foreseeable future.

Are Dolphins Endangered?

     The Amazon river dolphin is endangered due to human activities such as fishing, dam building and river dredging.

    The Amazon pink river dolphin are typically found solitarily as well as in small groups of 2 – 4 individuals.

&nbsp; The Amazon River dolphins are highly communicative animals, sometimes interacting with other dolphin species. Moreover, they frequently play with their logs as well as pull at underwater grass. Also, these dolphins can often be seen playing with turtles, fish, and other aquatic life forms. The Amazon River dolphins are most active in the early morning and late evening.

What can you do right now, and every day, to help the dolphins?

Many things. Most of them may seem very small and insignificant, but if enough people do them, the effect can be enormous.

The growth of commercial fishing in the Amazon River has significantly increased bycatch in fishing nets. The construction of dams disrupts the flow of rivers influencing the migration, feeding and reproduction of dolphins. Besides these, pollution creates serious risks for their health.

The population is in danger?

According to the I U C N Red List, the total population size of the Amazon river dolphin is unknown today, but there are estimated populations in certain areas. Thus, in the Amazon basin it is around 13.000 individuals and in the Orinoco basin there are around 200 individuals.

The Amazon River dolphin has a very long beak, which can contain up to 140 teeth.

     Due to living in highly murky waters with low visibility, these dolphins have small eyes and low vision.

          As the rainy season comes, the Amazon River dolphins move to ponds and lakes, since the rivers are flooded.
