The Golden Spider - The Legend

A thousand years ago there was the beautiful, very rich and peaceful city of Spina, situated near the current existing Lagoons of Comacchio. Its power and fame were known to all places known at that time. The merit of so much prosperity was the Golden Spider, a very powerful magical talisman placed on the entrance door of the city that had the task to protect it. But Spina's wealth and beauty were so big that they even sparked the envy of the sea, which tried to invade it several times; but the powerful magic of the Golden Spider always managed to repel it. Nevertheless, the sea didn’t give up and, after days of furious storms, managed to open a breach in the Spider web. The Spider, in response, reacted by sinking the entire city into the swamp, with all its habitants and its infinite treasures. And it is there, exactly under our feet that, according to the legend of Spina, it continues to live.

On the first day, we suggest you to take advantage of the beach, in order to get used to the territory of Comacchio and start enjoying your holiday by having fun. You can go to Lido degli Estensi beach. It is the largest one of the Lidi of Comacchio.

&nbsp;It offers lots of possibilities, from free beaches to beach resorts, as well as different sport activities: beach tennis, beach volley, kitesurf and many others. In the evening you can have a walk in the main avenue of Lido degli Estensi

On the sixth day, you can do an excursion through the Salt Flats, where the “white gold” of Comacchio is produced. There, you can do birdwatching and see a lot of species of birds like flamingos, seagulls, spoonbills, oystercatchers, little egrets, cormorants and herons.&nbsp;

On your way back you can have dinner in one of the many fish restaurants in Porto Garibaldi.&nbsp;

On the fourth day, we would like you to visit the Remo Brindisi Museum and to relax in Lido di Spina beach.

We are a group of guys of the 2nd and 3rd year of the Middle School of Porto Garibaldi (Ferrara, Italy). This work comes from a PON, a project financed by the European Union that has been won by our school.&nbsp; The aim of this project is to learn English by examining in depth everything that regards our area.&nbsp; It is a maritime territory surrounded by the Adriatic Sea and the Valleys of Comacchio. It offers a lot of touristic opportunities to those who decide to visit it.

We decided to create this little book because we want to propose a 7-day summer itinerary that can be used to discover the Comacchio area.&nbsp; Day by day, we will give advice about places to visit, activities, food and events. This itinerary is thought for a summer tourist, since it is the best season to better take advantage of our territory.&nbsp; Nevertheless, for those who don’t have the possibility to travel during summer, we have created a section proposing different alternatives, since other periods as well are rich in festivals, typical events and things to do.

On the third day, we suggest you have an evocative walk through the Lagoons of Comacchio. Starting from Stazione Pesca Foce, you can do birdwatching and admire hundreds of pink flamingos. After that, you can enjoy a boat trip in the Lagoons of Comacchio. It is a really unforgettable experience! 

It includes a stop in the historical fisheries, which have been transformed into authentic museums. After the trip you can have dinner in “Bettolino di Foce”, recently turned into a restaurant.

- The Cathedral of San Cassiano is the main church of Comacchio. It was built in 708. Its name derives from Saint Cassiano, the saint patron of Comacchio. In 1200 the cathedral was modified according to the Gothic style. - The "Santa Maria in Aula Regia" Church is a very beautiful sanctuary. You can go there by walking along the long arcade that links the centre of the city to the church. - In the middle of the arcade you will find the Pickle Manufactory, the old building where people used to cook the eels. Now it hosts a museum and is still the place to watch the traditional cooking of the eel, the typical Comacchiese food. - The “Loggia del Grano” was the place where people left the wheat. Today it hosts a good café.

On the second day, you can take a trip to Comacchio and walk through the city discovering all its beauties.

What if you can’t visit Comacchio in the Summer? Don’t worry... we have the solution for you!

You could go during Christmas time, when there are many events that you can enjoy. There are some typical markets where you can buy souvenirs to take home. You can also taste excellent wines and, for the little ones, a hot chocolate with the typical cake, “la Braciadella”. You can celebrate the new year with us in joy until late at night to the rhythm of music and spumante wine on the Tre Ponti that will be illuminated on the last night of the year. For children there is a very sweet celebration: the "Epifania", where a scene is enacted with the “befana” puppet, which is then burned. Then the children are given an epiphany sock full of sweets.

In Autumn there are two important events, including:&nbsp; The Eel Festival (end of September- beginning of October): the eel is the typical food of Comacchio and is cooked in many different ways; Halloween (the last weekend of October): the city centre is covered in creepy decorations and hosts lots of disguised tourists from all over the world.

In Spring the weather gets warmer and perfect if you want to experience what our area offers: the Birdwatching Festival in Comacchio, the Cuttlefish and Mantis Shrimp Festival in Porto Garibaldi, the exposition of flowers in Lido degli Estensi, as well as a lot of excursions by boat, bicycle, horse. 

The seventh day is the last of your holiday. It’s time to go back home, but first don’t miss a stop at the Porto Garibaldi beach. A last swim is worth it!&nbsp;

On the fifth day, you can cycle from Lido di Spina to Lido di Volano, discovering the seven Lidi of Comacchio: Lido di Spina, Lido degli Estensi, Porto Garibaldi, Lido degli Scacchi, Lido di Pomposa, Lido delle Nazioni and Lido di Volano. They are all linked by a cycling path. The most suggestive part is the pinewood between Lido delle Nazioni and Lido di Volano, where you can see a lot of deers.

- The Trepponti Bridge is also known as “Pallotta Bridge”. This bridge was built between 1631 and 1635, and was designed by the architect Luca Danese from Ravenna for Cardinale Pallotta. - The "Ponte degli Sbirri" is situated in the very centre of Comacchio, in fact it links together the most important points of the city. Its name derives from an old prison situated near it. - The "Delta Antico" Museum is a newly born archaeological museum that was inaugurated on 25th March of 2017. It is located in the building of the old hospital of the city. Nowadays, it is home for lots of ancient findings from different periods. - The Carmine Church is an old and richly decorated church in the centre of Comacchio. It was built in 1700. It is also known as “Beata Vergine di Monte Carmelo” church.
