Chalkboard

This week we have been learning about volcanos and what causes them to erupt. 

We showed this process using science. We added washing up liquid, bicarbonate of soda and water to a beaker. Then we added vinegar and watched it erupt as the chemicals reacted.

Today we learnt about the rock cycle and how the different types of rock are made.

Today we thought about dangers and risks. We discussed how to work through risky situations using the risk robot.

We looked out how the Ancient Romans decorated their homes with mosaic tiles. We designed our own tiles using simple patterns.

Step 2: Design. Using our research from the morning, we worked in teams to design our bridge structure.

Step 3: Build In the afternoon, we worked in our teams to build our bridges using card, art straws and masking tape.

To consolidate our learning about the Romans, Year 3 learnt and performed our end of term production: The Rocking Romans.

Next, we tested the effect of adding arches to a simple bridge design. We found that the more arches you had the more weight we were able to add. 

As part of his home learning, Elliot built his own volcano out of clay. He created a small hole in the top and added bicarbonate of soda. He then added vinegar so that it erupted. 

This half term most of our Maths work has been based on time. We consolidated telling the time to the nearest hour, half hour, quarter to and quarter past before moving on to telling the time to the nearest minute. 

We have also learnt the number of days in each month, how to convert between seconds, minutes and hours and how to read clocks which use Roman numerals to 12. 

We used our periscopes to see over the tables.

This week we have been practicing measuring and drawing lines accurately using a ruler. 

As part of our topic hook, we dressed as Roman citizens and learnt about the growth of the Roman Empire.

We looked at Roman shields and designed our own. Roman shields were symmetrical and usually red: the colour of strength and power. Most Roman shields had wings on them to symbolise the eagle, the symbol of the Roman army. Lightning bolts were also used to signify Jupiter, the king of the Roman Gods.

We tried on some Roman armour and held some shields and swords.

We learnt about the different ways in which seeds are dispersed from the flower, either by wind, bursting, water or by animals.

We looked closely at work by Joseph Tuner who painted lots of landscapes including Bolton Abby. 

We carefully dissected a tulip flower so that we could look at each part up close.

On Wednesday, the whole of Year 3 went to the Royal Armouries in Leeds to learn more about the Roman invasion of Britain and Boudica's rebellion.   

We were introduced to a Celtic warrior and a Roman solider who tried to convince us that their side was the best. 

If we moved the puppet further away from the light source, the puppet got smaller.

If we moved the puppet closer to the light source, the puppet got bigger.

Science - How are shadows made? How do they change?

We explored how shadows can be changed. We moved the shadow puppet closer and further away and observed how the shadow changed size.

In our science work we have be learning about the different layers of soil. This week we have learnt about the importance of worms for soil formation. We went hunting for our own worms to add to our class wormery.

We covered the window with the material can shone a light through it. We then looked through a small hole and counted how many reflective stickers we could see. 

We found that the gold material was the best for blocking out the sunlight because it was the most opaque.

We also practiced some Roman army formations and drills.

Today we started our unit on length and perimeter. We went outside to practise drawing lines in centimetres and metres. 

Stage 4: Review Once we completed our bridges we reviewed what went well and what could be improved upon. We tested our bridges to see if they were fit for purpose.

Science - Opaque, transparent and translucent materials

As part of our science unit we have been exploring materials which allow and do not allow light through them.  

Which material would be the best curtains that block light?

We learnt how to read digital times using the 12 hour clock, AM and PM.

We also learnt to calculate the duration using a number line. 

Topic Hook - How to be a palaeontologist.

We had a go at being palaeontologists by excavating chocolate chips from a cookie. We had to work carefully to make sure we didn't damage any of the artifacts (chocolate chips).

Today, we had to help Toad escape the police by building him a bridge to cross the river. 

Step 1 - Research. First, we looked at lots of different bridges from around the word and how they were constructed.

We used different coloured playdough to show the different rocks in the rock cycle and how they are made. 

The 3 coloured balls represent igneous rocks which are made by cooling magma. 

Over time igneous rocks break down and settle in layers on the sea floor. Over thousands of years these layers are pressed down to make sedimentary rock.

Extreme heat and pressure turns sedimentary rocks into metamorphic rocks. 

Half tone purple

We practised using a ruler to measure parts of the equipment in metres (m) and (cm). 

We brought in some small objects from home and pressed them into the clay to create fossils of the future. 

The risk robot is programmed to decide on how risky something is and then try to make it a safer situation.

We found out that the higher the sun was in the sky, the shorter the shadow was. At noon, when the sun is directly above, the shadow was the shortest. When the sun is rising and setting, the shadow was longer.

This week we looked closely at different fossils and had a go at sketching them in our Sketch Books.

We then discussed what the fossils of the future might look like.

We took part in some interactive story telling about Boudica's rebellion.

This half term we have build on our knowledge of parts of a plant from KS1, focusing on the parts within the flower head and their importance in the pollination process. 

We made paper sycamore seeds to help demonstrate how the wind helps the tree to disperse its seeds far and wide. We noticed that when the wind caught the 'helicopter' the seed went further away.

We also looked at some of the military formations the Roman's used. Can you spot the wedge? The tortoise? The Orb?

We used a wooden tile, clay mosaics and PVA glue to make our tile. Once the tile had dried, we added grout. 

Science - How do shadows change throughout the day?

We learnt how shadows are formed by an opaque object blocking the light.

We conducted an investigation to explore how a shadow changes when the sun crosses the sky. 

Today we found out how periscopes use mirrors to bounce light and enable people to see around corners or above surfaces like in submarines. We had a go at making our own periscopes using a cardboard template, two mirrors and some tape.
