Celebrating and Learning from Student Writing

Students love sharing their writing, especially if they know it is going to be published somewhere. Recently, I have been working with my students on creating a collaborative class book of their personal narratives they have been writing in class. Some amazing benefits!!! - they get to read more, see how they are publishing their pages and improve their own writing skills by reading others work!

Students photograph examples of their best work and annotate their learning reflections in text, audio or video. Work can be organised chronologically or in chapters by subject or topic. At the end of the year, students have a learning portfolio published! Over the course of the year, peers comment on each others portfolios gathering feedback as the year progresses.

Visible Thinking Routines

This is an excellent way to tune-in to a topic &amp; assess prior knowledge!

As teachers, we are familiar with the visible thinking routines and how they can lead to deeper inquiry. With all routines, it's important to make sure that the student questions and ideas are visible to the entire class. Some teachers use post-its, but why not use Book Creator?

Here's an example: Ask your students each question at a time, giving them a few minutes to add their responses to a collaborative Book Creator project. Then, allow students time to read the content posted by their peers. By the end, you have an incredible amount of information, student questions, and self-directed inquiry from just one activity!

Get the students to use their dual-coding skills to create an audio-visual dictionary of useful terms/vocabulary. A great way for getting students to interact with new content, or to create a 'Welcome to our class' guide for new students, explaining how class systems work etc...! Students can take a page each and a part of the school or curriculum and swiftly generate a comprehensive resource!

Step One: Draw from a pot a famous landmark for each student. Step Two: Using maps (flyover tour on iPad), grab an image of the landmark. Step Three: Research the landmark and use markup to make notes on your image. Step Four: Create your collaborative page in Book Creator.

1. Students create art, poetry, VR, audio/video in response to quotes, themes and ideas from reading. 2. Students write an artist's statement explaining their theme and inspiration as well as the tools they used to create. 3. Students collaborate to edit statements, design book layout, create cover page, forward... 4. Publish finished ebook for sharing with parents &amp; the world!

Year 3 - Making a "how to book" Using SwiftPlayground + Book Creator

Create a user guide for pupils who have never coded. Give the project importance and a reason to be accurate with their information. Allows them to embed images and videos as well as helps me to track progress and understanding of their coding knowledge.&nbsp; I can get them to consider layout, font, digital tools, literacy, comprehension as well as coding.

Exploring authors and their great works collaboratively.

Learners: - design chapters of a multitouch book about famous writers (...). - elicit information from a variety of sources. - structure their findings. - produce bits and pieces of multimedia (audio, video, ...). - actively feedback the work of their classmates.

How to ... Your chapter should contain: a short video ... maps / a timeline ... a short biography ... sample texts / pieces of work ... links for further reading ... some creative work ...

Multi-Purpose Collaboration Space: Jigsawing example

I'm a big fan of using 'Jigsawing' in inquiry at school. This new feature really lends itself well to the activity should the students choose to use tech to help them with completing the task.

Each student in a group of four becomes 'the expert' for one part of a topic and takes a page in a shared book.

The experts from each group that share a part of a topic discuss and refine their findings- the shared resource is available to all experts in a group. Experts can then re-share with their own groups

The experts research and teach the other members of the group about their part of the topic- using their shared book to gather their ideas.

We're really trying to 'slim down' on the number of apps we use at school. Book Creator is already one of these core apps, but this new feature adds a new dimension to the app and will enable us to 'slim down' even more! 

I am a primary school teacher and kept thinking how can I tell history exciting to children. With the app "PhotoSpeak" I can make history come alive. I put two ideas in this book. Enjoy it!

App-tastic Review/Showcase for Students and Staff

Have students (and/or staff) write app/program/website reviews to help others choose the right tool. Each page could include a link to the resource, have a screenshot of it, or include examples how the student has used it. Could include a student tips section as well as a teacher tips section. Skills used in each app could also be useful.

Students create a book for that week's vocabulary words. The student adds the definition, a picture, a sentence, an antonym or a synonym. The book is then used as a reference guide for the unit.

With collaboration feature everyone is assigned a page and complete book is available to each of them.

Students work together to create a journal of collaborative makerspace projects throughout the school year. The journal documents the progress of projects, the steps taken, and reflections on what worked and what didn't.

This also creates a portfolio of projects to inspire other students in future years.

Create Character Maps! Show Understanding! organize ideas!

Class podcasting is a great way to use Book Creator's collaborative feature. Divide the class into teams and give each team a topic to report on. A regular class podcast doesn't have to be particularly long (just a few minutes will do) and the episodes could even all have a similar running order of content. The podcast could even replace the traditional school newsletter. The finished book is then exported as a video and published online to YouTube, Anchor.fm or school website.

A great way to help students learn and understand!

Students create books to help them understand new concepts or topic in maths. They create instructions to help them understand the processes or methods. This can be done by text, audio, or video. The students can then use these for revision, or if they are stuck. You could make a class concept book by collaborating, so students who are strong in certain areas can help others. This could then be published onto a blog or school website.

1. Children take photographs of their written work and add it to a page in the fixing book 2. During 'fixing time' pupils find their fixing partner's work and check it for accuracy, spelling, punctuation and grammar. 3. They leave verbal or written feedback for their fixing partner. 4. Pupils check out their feedback and refine and improve their work.

Leave audio feedback next to the photograph of the work. You could also use arrows to point to specific areas of focus. 

Students build the postcard collaboratively. This can be achieved in a number of ways. For example, 1. Taking on different roles - one does words, one does speaking 2. Each student chooses the place they are going to describe to build up a spoken picture of a town, house, uniform etc.
