Thoughts when facing culturally diverse science classrooms.
The two greatest pitfalls of science education are believing that certain cultures or groups behave in specific ways, and taking away the culture from the dominant culture, or believing that the dominant culture is not a culture at all.
Teachers need to be aware of a students prior knowledge in the academic fields such as science and math, and in turn we need to be especially concerned with learning our students cultural background knowledge.
Students are not cultural representatives in science or any subject, they simply are students, that have a culture, and a voice within their culture that they bring to the classroom.
Avoid trying to be a "savior" to students. This implies trying to change something fundamental to the students.

A students cultural background is a valuable resource for a teacher if they are willing to learn it, grow from it, and build upon it. To be culturally inclusive in your classroom it takes great efforts and lengths to make sure you understand your students. In the end it benefits everyone academically and beyond academics.
"There is no cultural distance between students of color and a successful science education." (Brown, 2013)
