The Highway

One day when it was raining in the valley, Hernando was waiting for the rain to stop. But Hernando noticed that the road was empty, there were no cars around. This got Hernando thinking because that road had always been full of cars passing by him so that people could take a picture with him, but that day there was no one there and that made him feel very strange. The next day when Hernando went out of his house and the drops could be heard, he noticed a car, then many, many cars began to arrive across the road, but they were going very fast and that was also strange. After that there were no more cars. Suddenly in the distance Hernando saw a car coming down the mountain so fast that he thought it was going to fall apart. As soon as the car arrived in front of Hernando, the guy inside asked him if he could give them some water. There were 5 other girls in the car and they were all wet from the open top car that the young man was driving. Hernando went to get the water, but he noticed that all of them were scared. When he brought the water to them, the girls were crying a lot, and that's when the young man told him that something terrible was going to happen, but Hernando hadn't heard anything. The people in that car wanted to get home quickly because the atomic war had begun. When they left Hernando was bewildered, in his small world he knew nothing of the big world he lived in. So he took no notice of what the young man told him about the war.

Personal Reflection

"What do they mean by 'the world'?" he said." This phrase made us think about how uninformed people who live in places far from the cities can be. We could see it reflected in today's society as we relate to a town in Veracruz that is a bit far from the big cities. They are not quite up to date with what is happening outside of that place. It is not that they don't know anything about today's world, but that they have missed certain details.

The Last Night of the World

A couple was wondering what they would do if this was the last night of the world. The woman replied that she had never thought about it , while the man poured himself a cup of coffee and his daughters were playing on the carpet with their toys. The man tells her that she should start thinking about the answer. His confused wife asks him if he is serious and the man nods, the woman tries to guess what will happen asking if there will be a war, an atomic bomb or a hydrogen bomb, among other things being all denied by the man. He tells her that it is just a premonition and that he does not know what will happen, but that for 4 nights he has been dreaming with a voice that tells him that everything would end, that the world would stop. What surprised him the most was that the next day everyone at work commented that they had the same dream, in fact he asked one of his colleagues named Sam what he thought about it. He answered that he had the same dream as everyone, they were all astonished to see that they dreamt the same thing, but that did not alarm them, in fact they calmed down and did their daily activities. When he got home to his wife, he told her what he had discovered at work and that he was absolutely sure that this would be his last day. Even the neighbors had dreamt the same thing, but that didn't scare the lady of the house, the wife, either. In fact she said she thought she would be afraid but she felt nothing of the sort. When they both finished discussing the matter, they thought about whether they were good parents, even mentioning what they would lose and what they hated about their life. Then they thought about what the rest would do, they thought they would do the same since there was nothing else to do. Then they listened to music, ate, did what they would do on a normal day, it should be noted that they mentioned that apparently their daughters did not know about what was going to happen that day. At the end of the day they went to bed, the faucet was open and the woman went to close it, ironic because it would be her last day alive, but in the end they just went to sleep saying good night.

Personal Reflection

"Do you know, I won't miss anything but you and the girls. I never liked cities or my work or anything except you three." This phrase makes it very clear that when we leave this world we will not care about material things. Probably when we leave this world the first thing we will think about will be the people who have surrounded us all our lives.
