We'll look at the roll out to the new Aotearoa History Curriculum and what the jargon means.
We'll learn how to look through a different 'lens' in History - meet some dodgy characters (some of whom have statues of themselves dotted around the country).
And you'll hear a story from a little boy who met James Cook in 1769.
History is NOT just about remembering dates and dead white guys who won the war. History IS about blood and guts, sex and violence, broken promises, cheating and lying, revolution and survival. Why did these things happen?
We'll learn how to look through different 'lenses' in History - meet some dodgy characters.
And you'll hear a story about the war that has caused the biggest loss of life in all of Aotearoa's conflicts in the last 200 years.
Let's look at Revisionist History -
it's the way we do things now.
Historical revisionism
"The reinterpretation of orthodox views on evidence, motivations, and decision-making processes surrounding a historical event"
So teaching and learning history is done as 'revisionist history' now.
Don't be fooled by journalists who use 'revisionist history' incorrectly ~ They'll describe revisionism as the kind of history Trump might use...
Historical negationism, sometimes called "historical revisionism" or "revisionist history", the distortion of the historical record such that certain events appear to have occurred and/or impacted history in a way that is in drastic disagreement with the historical record and/or consensus, and usually meant to advance a socio-political view or agenda.

Aotearoa NZ History has, until about 30 years ago, been Focused on and through a colonial lens.
Within that lens is quite a bit of historical negationism. This keeps it 'clean' and there are no bad guys, or at least not British ones. Any other history is whitewashed or left out completely.
What are the challenges of teaching NZ History?
