Characteristics
It is the oldest member of the weasel family (Mustelidae), and one of the largest predators in the Amazon forests.
Adults reach a length of about 2 meters.
River otters are brown in color with a yellowish-white patch on their throat, which is unique to each individual.
Habitat
It is found exclusively in very remote areas of the center and south of our Amazon.
In the country, they live, for the most part, in the central East, although there are also otters in the northern part of our jungle.
Species diet
Their diet is based on fish, but occasionally they eat crustaceans, molluscs, amphibians, reptiles, insects, birds and even small mammals.
In general, they are opportunistic animals and their diet varies according to the geographical region where they are found.
Causes of its extinction
The giant otter is listed as a Critically Endangered (CR) species, according to the Ecuadorian Red List, and as an Endangered (EN) species on the IUCN Red List.
Otter destruction is primarily due to hunting for the fur trade, which was high in the early 1970s, and habitat loss, which together caused local extinctions throughout the Otter's range.
How can I help the conservation of this species?
1. Sowing awareness among people that housing these animals is a crime due to the risk of becoming extinct
2. Put up posters with the aim that people find out about this issue that does great damage to our planet
3. When you see any abuse or home of this animal in danger of extinction, report it immediately
