GLACIAL FORMATION

1. I can explain how a glacier is formed:

•When more snow falls in winter than melts in the summer.
•Often in north facing hollows, where there is less sunlight / heat (in the northern hemisphere).
•Over many years the weight of the snow compresses the previous years snow turning it into ice.
•The weight of the ice and gravity pull the glacier downhill.

2. I can explain how a glacier erodes and shapes the landscape by the processes of:

1.Plucking
2.Abrasion
3.Freeze - Thaw

1 – Plucking:
when ice sticks onto rocks at the sides of the valley and rips them out as it moves. This action erodes a steeper hollow.

2 – Abrasion:
when rocks frozen into the base of the glacier grind the valley floor as the glacier moves. This action erodes a deeper hollow.

3 - Freeze – Thaw:
water gets into cracks in rocks, when it freezes the water expands. Repeated over many times this can shatter rock away from the rock face.

1. Corrie

1.Description: A corrie is an arm-chair shaped hollow in a mountain.

2.Formation: Formed when snow compresses into ice and then a glacier.

3.Process: By abrasion, when rocks frozen into the base of the glacier grind at the valley floor as the glacier moves.

4. Process: And by plucking; when ice sticks onto rocks at the sides of the valley and rips them out as it moves.

2. Arete

1.Description: An Arete is a ridge between two corries.

2.Formation: Formed when snow compresses into ice and then a glacier.

3.Process: By abrasion, when rocks frozen into the base of the glacier grind at the valley floor as the glacier moves.

Process: And by plucking; when ice sticks onto rocks at the sides of the valley and rips them out as it moves.

3. Pyramidal Peak

1.Description: A Pyramidal Peak is a sharply pointed summit between three corries.

2.Formation: Formed when snow compresses into ice and then a glacier.
