Coastal Processes of Erosion
Hydraulic Action
This is the force of the waves crashing against the shore and cliffs.
Abrasion
This is when rocks carried by the waves are thrown against the cliffs, wearing away the coastline.
Attrition
Rocks carried by the waves smash into each other, wearing each other away and creating smaller material to be used as erosion.
Solution
Chemicals in our sea water dissolve minerals in certain rocks.
This is the force of the waves crashing against the shore and cliffs.

This is when rocks carried by the waves are thrown against the cliffs, wearing away the coastline.
Attrition
Rocks carried by the waves smash into each other, wearing each other away and creating smaller material to be used as erosion.

transport sand up the beach at that angle.
Gravity pulls waves (backwash) down the beach at 90°

1. Description: When there are alternate bands of hard and soft rock in contact with the sea.
2. Formation: The sea erodes the soft rock more quickly forming a Bay; and leaving the hard rock jutting out as a Headland.
3. Process: By hydraulic action the force of the waves crashing against the shore and cliffs.
4. Process: And by abrasion when rocks carried by the waves are thrown against the cliffs, wearing away the coastline.

1. Description: A free-standing piece of rock called a stack which is separate from the headland.
2. Formation: Waves attack a line of weakness in the headland, developing into a cave and the arch, continuous erosion will cause the roof of the arch to collapse.
3. Process: By hydraulic action the force of the waves crashing against the shore and cliffs.
4. Process: And by abrasion when rocks carried by the waves are thrown against the cliffs, wearing away the coastline.
