1. LAND USE
Land uses appropriate to the Glacial and Coastal landscapes.
The land uses should be chosen from:

•Farming
•Forestry
•Industry
•Recreation and tourism
•Water storage and supply
•Renewable energy

2. LAND USE CONFLICTS & SOLUTIONS
In relation to Glacial landscapes, candidates should be able to describe and explain:

1.The conflicts which can arise between land uses within this landscape

2.The solutions adopted to deal with the identified land use conflicts

Land Use suitability

1. I can explain the suitability of the following land uses:

Farming

Forestry

Recreation & Tourism

Renewable Energy
Hill Sheep Farming: In the highlands hill sheep farming is common because:

1.Sheep can survive on the poor-quality grass

2.They cope well on steep slopes

3.Their wool means they can deal with harsh weather conditions and remain outdoors all year round

4.This type of farming does not require machinery which is not suited to the steep land
Forestry: Commercial forestry is suitable in upland areas for the following reasons:

1.They grow well in the poor soils.

2.In remote areas they do not require much time on maintenance.

3.They cope well with the harsh climate and lots of rain

4.Limited machinery is required and is suitable for steep slopes.
Recreation and Tourism: the landscape allows for a great variety of leisure and tourist opportunities. Some people like going to the upland areas for the following reasons:

1.The steep land and cold climate is suitable for skiing and snowboarding in the winter.

2.The rocks and mountains can make for excellent rock climbing and hill walking. (Ben Lomond)

3.Fast flowing rivers and large Lochs can be used for water sports such as kayaking and white – water rafting.

4.Tourists like to go camping and the quiet scenery is good for dog walking. (walks in Queen Elizabeth Forest Park)
Renewable Energy: from HEP (Hydro – electric power) is suitable in this area for the following reasons:

1. Exposed high land means there is a lot of rain.

2. Rivers / lochs can be dammed to provide water for HEP.

3. Fast flowing rivers can turn turbines more effectively.

4. The large amount of rain in the highland means there is always enough water supply for turbines.
Renewable Energy: from wind turbines is suitable in this area for the following reasons:

1.Exposed high land means there is a lot of wind.

2. Fewer people in this sparsely populated area may be affected by the wind farm.

3. Cheap land as it can't be used for much else allows for large wind farms.

4. Lack of buildings which may block the wind.
