2Earthquakes are caused by a rock beneath the ground that snaps in half. That happens when energy is forced into the street. Plates move, stretch,and squeeze. Also the rocks on the edge shift into one and the other. Then the crust of the earth CRACKS. Then EARTHQUAKE when the crust breaks the earth shifts.
Cause
An effect is shaking. Also the land can be chopped in half like the rocks are having a fight. The shaking could be so powerful that the waves could go 1000 miles. That could make a whole city claps. Also the land can be deformed.

Why
San Francisco earthquake went 248 miles across and 6 miles down. Also brick buildings clasped and 30,000 other buildings clasped. sadly gas crepes threw the streets. Then there was fires from the gas.That cost lives like 500 people and it cost billions of dollars.
