Pros and Cons
This chapter will teach you how to communicate your thoughts on many topics. In our way of life, we frequently hear and read news and then express our thoughts with our friends. To convey it, in case it's a pro or a con, we must state it naturally in order for others to comprehend our point of view. In such situations, we must express ourselves respectfully.
You will be able to do the following after reading this chapter:
1. Recognize about discussions, pros, and cons.
2. Read through all of the existing topics and make a list of them.
3. Discuss the readings and participate in debates.
4. Compose or rewrite discussion texts.
5. Gather a variety of discussion texts.
Did you know?
Discussions are used to examine multiple perspectives on a topic. Discussions allow us to consider a variety of viewpoints before making an informed decision.

Pro is an argument about why you believe in that topic, and you provide evidence to support your argument.

Con is one in which you express why you do not believe in a topic and provide evidence to support your position.

Debating
To achieve effective communication, we must ensure that our listeners understand what we are saying and our words are delivered effectively. If we want to debate and put our points of view, we must express it politely.

Here are following words of pros and cons:
Pros : do, like, agree, positive, advantage, fact, and fond.
Cons: don't, dislike, disagree, negative, disadvantage, gossip, condemn, object to.
Ways to say it
If you want to express an agreement politely in English, you should use phrases that are modified to be more polite, such as:
- I agree completely/entirely with this topic because...
- I'm sure about that
- I like with that topic because...
Or you can also use this phrases in informal agreement:
- Yes, up to a point
- Yes, in a way
- Well, it depends

While if you want to express a disagreement politely in English, you should use phrases that modified to be more polite, such as:
- I'm afraid I disagree
- I'm not sure about that
- I don't see that way
Or you can also use this phrases in informal disagreement:
- You can not be serious
- No way
- That’s not correct

Ilbas: "What do you think we should do about video games?"

Aska: "In my opinion, video games give a lot of benefits. It can refresh a child's mind after a tiring school day."

Ilbas: "Actually, I'm not sure about that. According to the article I read, video games make children lazy. Playing video games is addictive. Therefore, many children prefer playing video games than studying."

Aska: "I don't think that's very good argument because video games can trigger children to be more creative. The games provide a challenge, so they can sharpen human's brains."

Ilbas: "Sorry, I don't see that way. There's no easy solution to the dilemma."

Nowadays, the video game industries are developing rapidly. They have become multi-billion dollar industries. Video games have become an important part not only of children's lives but also of adults.

Nevertheless, there are some arguments whether video games have good or a bad influence on children.

People who believe in the good influence of video games say that video games kill children's boredom and refresh their minds after a tiring school day. The games encourage children to be more creative because the games challenge children to win. The games sharpen their brains.
