Sami was born in Rodi in 1930, an island where everyone lived in peace, ruined by racial laws. At the age of 13 he was deported with his family that will die. Sami is the only one who saves himself and escapes. Sami finds himself on the front line with the Soviet Army and is then forced to flee on foot across half of Europe and then arrives in an Italy brought to its knees by the war. After two years of unsafes jobs and bad housing, but cheered by his friends and the discovery of love, when Sami was seventeen decided to leave again, this time in the Belgian Congo. Here he will be successful professionally but new dangers await him, at the outbreak of the civil war. The story of Sami Modiano is a plot interwoven with farewells and departures to which he has always opposed the determination to regain possession of his roots.
