Oregon Coast Field Study

Depoe Bay is known as the whale watching navigatable harbour and the world’s smallest horbour. On March 11, 2011, the port was damaged by a tsunami caused by an earthquake off the coast of Japan.

When the Europeans arrived in Canada they destroyed the First Nations culture and ways of living in a manner that couldn’t be undone. Initially the Europeans were in harmony the First Nations trading fur and exchanging information on the terrain. The First Nations were nothing but nice to the Europeans. However, the Europeans got greedy and took the land from the First Nations and killed them or enclosed them in small areas called reserves. The First Nations couldn’t do anything about the Europeans and had to abide to their rules. Though conditions are getting better for indigenous people, things still need to be done.

Highest tide intertidal life (starfish)

The way tsunami machine worked is from 3 basic components that make it work. The first part of the tsunami machine is the motor. This is the part of the machine makes the other components move and operate. The next part is the guide access and pulley, this is the part that moves the final component to make the waves. This part pulls the final component either rapid and weak (sine waves) or one strong wave doing way more damage (tsunami). The final component is the transparent wall which pushes the water very fast making the different waves.

Criteria for the science experiment

The criteria are group used were compressed into a few words. The first thing you need to do is the question you trying to find an answer to. The next step you are supposed to do in the scientific process is the hypothesis. Next you need to design an experiment and collect the data from it. The final process is the conclusion, this should reflect all of your thoughts and facts that you collected. The process is then repeated the scientist and the science community.

Crossing the bar why or why not.

I would only cross the bar with the North and south jetties in place but I understand why explorers and major companies wanted to before the jetties. The reason I would cross is because the jetties control control and calm down the water. However, if I needed to cross without the jetties it would be hard to say whether I would do it because of the danger. I would be nervous and filled with adrenaline but the experience would be very unique and an once in a life time experience. The major companies on the other hand are on a time tight schedule to make money and would have had to do it rain or shine. Any delay in crossing would mean less money  which would to crossing when it was more dangerous resulting in possible accidents.

Zip line helpful for little towns

Fun activities like zip lining are very helpful to small towns because they attract lots of attention  to the little shops in the area. These businesses will bring in many people who spend money at other businesses which improves the economy in the town resulting in growth .

The reason why you are not supposed to take the anything from the Yaquinna beach is because it is a national park. You can’t take anything from national parks as if you could there would be nothing let to see.

Fort Stevens was a hidden 20th century military base built with the soul purpose to protect the water where the Columbia river and the Pacific Ocean meet . The military base housed up to 1500 people with bakeries, shops and lots more. Six inch batteries were used to protect the waters and Fort Stevens had lots of them. A battery is a manned artillery firearm that uses a counter weight to operate and have as little of the gun showing as possible. This gun required many men doing jobs including retrieving ammunition, loading and aiming the gun, locating the coordinates of the fire and communicating between different rooms. The base later was recommissioned into a office for WW2. The underground battery roof was covered in concrete to hide the battery from above because with the advancement of planes countries would be able to attack this threat if they could find it.

What I learned from the boat tour

The ocean contains an electrical current The waters electrical current would deteriorate the metal such as steel So if you need to have metal on your boat it needs to be zinc plated as it has a high conductive trait.

Hatfield Marine Science Center R.O.V. Challenge

The R.O.V. challenge was a group task that built and tested teamwork and engineering. A R.O.V. Is a remote operated vehicle that can view marine life, sunken vessels and lots more that people couldn’t usually see on their own. The groups were given each three motors, one controller and parts to build their R.O.V. My group instantly started planing our design for our best possible R.O.V. We settled on a concept and gathered our materials to begin. We all put the pieces together and it was all going well until we had to add the motors. We had to change some of the bottom so the left and right motors were angled in. The second problem my group had was the lack of diversity and quantity of pieces. As this was a low budget project the amount was of pieces were shared between 6 groups so the PVC pipes and connectors ran low. This was a struggle for my group because we had to rethink our original idea. Another problem that made us rethink our idea was the diverse amount of items. The fact that we couldn’t cut our own PVC piping and scarce amount of types of connectors both made it more difficult in building the R.O.V. The R.O.V. preformed very good and my group could all pick up the magnetic items with the magnet attached to the bottom of our R.O.V. This was all going well until the propeller on the bottom motor broke off causing us not to compete in the competition. Overall I think my group very good job but I would do change things for next time. First I would add an extra motor for the up and down maneuver to make the R.O.V. more stabilized and easier to control. The second thing I would change would be the placement of the magnet. The magnet that hard is to use but with a slight adjustment it would pick up way more items.

Why the Northwest trek is important

The Northwest trek wildlife park is a protected animal reserve where animals are kept in a open space to be protected. This park is important because of many different reason for animals in there and the recognition of animals living in the Northwest for the future. The golden eagles were injured or disabled resulting in them not being able to fly. The Northwest trek protected the eagles from harmful animals and fed them so they could survive as flight is how they hunt. The grizzly bear cubs’ mothers were kilt due to poaching and one mother was too aggressive to humans. The cubs may of died because of no mother to teach, protect and feed them. They brought the cubs to the trek to be taken care of so the bears could enjoy a happy. However, the animals aren’t just for the animals in there but at every exhibit there is information on them. This information can be taken into account and can help save millions of animals in the future. The feeling of helping the animals and that you are impacting animals lives for the greater good is probably what inspires them to work there

This video is a clip of the bridge across the Columbia river. The bridge connects Washington state and  Oregon. The bridge took around 5 minutes to drive over and was a really beautiful.

The reason I am excited to see the Astoria column

I am excited to see grey whales because …

I’m looking forward to the Astoria column because of the amazing history along the side of the tower. I am also looking forward to the amazing view from the top of the column.

I really want to see a whale in Oregon because of how unique they are. I am interested in learning about their seasonal migration routes and how much they have to eat before setting out. I am really hopping to see and learn more about the grey whales.

Tillamook Cheese Factory and Izzy’s Buffet

Tillamook creamery founded

The Tillamook creamery was founded in 1894. Small creameries joined together to make sure only quality cheese was produced. There were lots farms around the area that helped form this co-op. They built the creamery in a location that allowed easy access for the farmers and consumers. Tillamook creamery skyrocketed in business and is now national business.

I am really heavy into basketball spending my extra time to practice and improve. I play water polo in the summer season this year as a recreational and endurance strengthening event. My favourite subjects in school are math and science. I enjoy listening to music and playing my trumpet. I have one younger brother and one older sister both playing basketball. I have a golden retriever rescued from Taiwan named Friday.
