Well, the reason is because you saw how they were stacked up on top of each other well that's because we need to add the numbers in the one place first. Then add the numbers in the ten places to get your answer. In this case 110!

WHY DO WE CARRY?
See how I put the number 1 on the bottom and carried the other 1 from the 11 to the top...
Now you are probably wondering why there is the number one on the canvas. Well, it's because 5 + 6 is 11 and that is too big of a number. So you have to keep one number in its place, and you have to carry the other number on top.
