Spring customs and celebrations

Η άνοιξη σηματοδοτεί το ξύπνημα της βλάστησης και την ανάσταση της φύσης από τη χειμερία νάρκη. Παντού στην Ευρώπη υπάρχουν τελετές και έθιμα διωγμού του χειμώνα και υποδοχής της άνοιξης.

Spring marks the awakening of vegetation and the resurrection of nature from hibernation. Everywhere in Europe there are ceremonies and customs of winter persecution and welcome of spring.

Τα Χελιδονίσματα (κάλαντα της άνοιξης)
Τον ερχομό της άνοιξης αναγγέλλει, από την αρχαιότητα, η άφιξη του χελιδονιού. Στη Βουλγαρία και στη βόρεια Ελλάδα το γεγονός γιορτάζεται με ειδική πομπή των αγοριών γύρω στις αρχές Μαρτίου, που περιφέρουν ένα ειδικά φτιαγμένο ομοίωμα χελιδονιού από σπίτι σε σπίτι και τραγουδούν ειδικά κάλαντα.

The swallows (spring carols)
The arrival of spring is announced, since antiquity, by the arrival of the swallow. In Bulgaria and northern Greece the event is celebrated with a special procession of boys around the beginning of March, who walk around a specially made swallow dummy from house to house and sing special carols.

Το ομοίωμα χελιδονιού κατασκευάζεται από ξύλο και τοποθετείται στην άκρη ενός μπαστουνιού ή γυρίζει σ’ έναν κινητό άξονα ή κουνιέται με το τράβηγμα μιας κλώνας.

The swallow dummy is made of wood and is placed on the edge of a cane or rotated on a movable shaft or rocked by pulling a strand.

Με την περιφορά του χελιδονιού συνδέεται και μια άλλη συνήθεια: το δέσιμο ενός ασπροκόκκινου νήματος στο λαιμό του ομοιώματος ή πιο συχνά στο χέρι των παιδιών. Αυτό ονομάζεται «μάρτης», στη Βουλγαρία «martenica» και στην Αλβανία «manak».

Another habit is associated with the swallow's circumference: tying a white-red thread around the dummy's neck or more often in children's hands. This is called "martis", in Bulgaria "martenica" and in Albania "manak".

Υπάρχουν μαρτυρίες για τα κάλαντα του χελιδονιού από την αρχαιότητα. Ο Αθήναιος Ναυκρατίτης, στο δεκαπεντάτομο έργο του «Δειπνοσοφισταί», γύρω στα 200 μ.Χ. σώζει το τραγούδι της χελιδόνας όπως τραγουδιόταν στη Ρόδο. Το τραγούδι αυτό μοιάζει εξαιρετικά με το σημερινό.

There are testimonies of swallow carols from antiquity. Athenian Naukratitis, in his fifteen-volume work "Deipnosofistai", around 200 AD. saves the swallow's song as it was sung in Rhodes. This song is very similar to today.

Και τότε όπως και σήμερα, τα παιδιά επισκέπτονταν τα σπίτια τραγουδώντας το τραγούδι της χελιδόνας και αναγγέλλανε ότι ο χειμώνας πέρασε και έρχεται το καλοκαίρι, το φέρνει η χελιδόνα, που πάντα αναχωρεί το φθινόπωρο και επιστρέφει την άνοιξη. Τα παιδιά εύχονταν ακόμη καλοχρονιά και γονιμότητα των ζώων και των φυτών. Η νοικοκυρά έπρεπε τότε να χαρίσει δώρα από το κελάρι της. Αν δεν τους έδινε κάποιο δώρο, την κορόιδευαν και την απειλούσαν.

And then, as today, the children visited the houses singing the song of the swallow and announced that winter has passed and summer is coming, it is brought by the swallow, which always departs in autumn and returns in spring. The children also wished a happy new year and the fertility of the animals and plants. The housewife then had to give gifts from her cellar. If she did not give them a gift, they would make fun of her and threaten her.

Τα παιδιά στόλιζαν το κλουβί με πρασινάδες (κισσό), καθώς και με διάφορες ασπροκόκκινες κλωστές, τις λεγόμενες «μάρτες». Έδιναν στη νοικοκυρά φύλλα κισσού για να τα τοποθετήσει στο κοτέτσι, για να γεννούν πολλά αυγά οι κότες. Η νοικοκυρά έδινε στα παιδιά αβγά ή χρήματα και αυτά της έδιναν «μάρτες» ως δώρο για τα μικρά κορίτσια του σπιτιού. Αυτές τις κλωστές τις έδεναν τα κορίτσια στο χέρι ή στο λαιμό.

The children decorated the cage with greenery (ivy), as well as with various white-red threads, the so-called "martes". They gave the housewife ivy leaves to place in the henhouse, so that the hens could lay many eggs. The housewife gave the children eggs or money and they gave her "martes" as a gift for the little girls in the house. These threads were tied by the girls to the hand or neck.
