Chapter 1 Home Sweet Freezing Home
Where do Emperor Penguins live?
Wild Emperor penguins are only found in one of the harshest, coldest climates in the world Antarctica. They breed and raise their young mostly on Fast Ice. Fast ice is floating platform of frozen ocean which is connected to the land or to ice shelves. In addition, there are about 40 Emperor Penguin colonies all around the coasts of the Antarctic continent. Also, the arctic winter is harsh, and it is the most coldest and windiest place on the planet. For example, during some parts of the winter, they even have to endure 24 hours darkness without sunlight! Emperor Penguins face wind chills as cold as -60°C and blizzards of 124 mph. However, despite such harsh conditions, emperor penguins spend their entire lives on the ice or in the surrounding waters of Antarctica. All in all, Emperor Penguins homes are harsh, but it is sweet home to them!

Chapter 2 Built to Survive
To survive in this severely cold climate, emperor penguin's bodies have special adaptations. First, four layers of scale-like feathers protect them from icy winds and provide a waterproof coat. What this means is these penguins can store large amounts of fat which keep their bodies warm while serving as a long-lasting energy source. In addition, in the Book the Life Cycle of an Emperor Penguin, it says they have small bills and flippers, "which helps to save heat, and special nostrils which warm up the air before they exhale". Furthermore, Emperor Penguins have the ability to recycle their own body heat.Emperor penguins are also specially adapted to traveling in this extreme habitat. They use strong claws on their feet to help grip the surface as they shuffle along. They also slide on their sleek bellies while pushing with their feet. This is called Tobogganing. Finally, at sea, Emperor Penguins glide through the water with great speed and agility. In closing, as you can see, Emperor Penguin's bodies are built to survive the harsh Arctic winters.
