Writing Case

The writing case was the best way for people to communicate in the time of the colonization of New France. When there was no technology they had to write everything about what was going on population growth, inventions, children, war, and most importantly trade down on paper and send it away on a boat or by carriage. It takes a very long time for letters to travel but it seemed like it was very efficient at the time, this writing case was part of the beginning of communications and it would have helped with the inventions of phones, and mail. The writing case was made for people to write important letters to the most important people. Most people don’t have this writing case because it is only made for the most important people. We know nothing about this particular writing case but I do think it travelled many places across many oceans.
Once upon a time there was a 13 year old boy his name was Jeremy. Ever since he was 5 he has researched about many different histories. Jeremy does well in all academic subjects but he does best in historical topics. Almost every month he goes to at least 3 museums and he studies artifacts just for fun, Jeremy knows just about everything about every artifact from the years of New France’s colonization. One Sunday afternoon Jeremy decided he wanted to go to a museum so he got his computer out and looked for history museums that he hadn’t gone to yet. He found one called the Museum of New France. He had read about New France in a couple textbooks and learned a little about it in school so he headed over to the bus stop and waited for it to arrive. Jeremy got on the bus with a book about New France in his hands. During the hour long bus ride he read everything that he could possibly learn about New France so he would know what to look for in the museum. The bus came to a stop in front of the museum, Jeremy got off and headed inside, when he got inside he took a deep breath and let it out there were so many ancient objects in the room.

The bus came to a stop in front of the museum, Jeremy got off and headed inside, when he got inside he took a deep breath and let it out there were so many ancient objects in the room.
Each room had a certain set of artifacts all the objects were from the same category and they were all similar. There were objects for almost everything you could think of entertainment, science, exploration, daily life, population, heritage those were all very interesting. Jeremy read about each artifact so he new just about everything about it. He went into the room for communication this was the most amazing room for Jeremy because he loved writing letters and stories. He looked at everything in the room, some letters that had been salvaged and other strange looking objects that were used for communication but one object caught his eye it was an old beaten up writing case this was extremely beautiful in Jeremy’s eyes. Jeremy read about it for half an hour then he went up to a man that worked at the museum and asked “Could you open this case so I can get a better look at the artifact.”
the man said “yes but I will have to stand by so you don’t try to steal it”
The man walked over and Jeremy followed, he took a bunch of keys out of his pocket and opened the case. It smelled a little musty but that didn’t bother Jeremy, he looked at it from all angles then he reached out his hand to touch the object. His fingers caressed the artifact it was a rough metal and extremely cold, suddenly images started flashing through Jeremy’s head.
There were thousands of letters and small towns there were soldiers and wars, Kings and Queens then the images started to slow down and Jeremy felt the ground again but something was off. The ground was not the smooth museum tiles it was rocked and felt like a path on a hike. He opened his eyes and was shocked “w wh where am I” He realized he was in New France. He had no idea where in New France he was so he tried to walk up to some one but he couldn’t move it was like there was a chain and ball keeping him from moving he looked around and he saw something familiar the writing case he was so interested in although now it was smooth and shiny rather than rough and beat up. The case was on a table and behind that table was an elderly looking man writing a letter it looked like the letter was to the king and from what Jeremy could tell it looked like it was about the colonization of New France. Suddenly the words of the letter appeared in front of Jeremy like a TV screen.
Dear king Henry VI,

The colonization of New France is not going as well as planned it is going a little slowly. We have gotten the women you have sent over and most of them have had children but the population is still small and there are not enough workers. I would like to ask if you may send over some more men who are willing to work. I believe if you send over more people we will have a big change in population and productivity of this colony.

Sincerely,
John Sharp

After Jeremy read that letter he appeared on a giant boat in the middle of the ocean next to the writing case with the letter in it. He sat on the terribly rocky boat for around 15 minutes with still no land in sight. He appeared in what seemed like one of the kings rooms he saw the king in a chair behind a table reading the same letter that John Sharp just wrote. The king seemed angry when he started writing his reply Jeremy assumed he was mad about the slow moving colonization. Jeremy watched the king write for a while and waited to read what his reply to the old man in New France would be.

Dear John Sharp,

This is incredibly unexceptionable i will send 30 men and 15 women and if you do not get this town up and running in 3 months there will be punishments so do not mess this up for me. Make sure each woman has at least 4 children and make the children start working at the age of 5 they must learn how to work at this age so they are not completely useless when they get older. The young girls will learn to cook and clean and the boys will learn how to fight, build, trade, and every other possible job you need to get this to work.

Sincerely King Henry VI
After what seemed like a week of reading letters and learning about New France he knew he had an amazingly easy life because most of the time people of New France spent most of the day working in the fields and clearing the land, guard duty and voyages of exploration. Although Jeremy’s knew life in New France was extremely hard in these time he did learn that they did have fun in there small amount of free time they would drink spirits and play cards, billiards, backgammon or dice, Gambling, and sometimes they would gather together and have small celebrations and tell stories.
Jeremy lifted his hand off the writing case and realized what felt like weeks in New France only seconds had passed the man who opened the case was still standing there and the writing case was still beat up and old. When Jeremy got home he sat at his desk and stated to write about his experience in a journal now every week he reads that journal to remember what happened that Sunday afternoon.

That letter was very disturbing to Jeremy because he talked about women as if they were objects and children as if they had no use other then labour.
