The history of Newcastle upon Tyne dates back almost 2,000 years. It has been controlled by the Romans, the Angles, the Norsemen and others.
The first settlement dates from the Roman period, when a fort was built on a site close to where the Tyne Bridge is now.
The city grew as an important centre for the wool trade and became a major coal mining area.

St James' Park is a football stadium in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. It is the home of Premier League club Newcastle United F.C. It has 52,305 seats, it is the eighth largest football stadium in England.
The Angel of the North is a contemporary sculpture by Antony Gormley, located in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, England just outside Newcastle. Completed in 1998, it is the largest sculpture of an angel in the world and is viewed by around 33 million people every year.

Charles Grey was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 1830 to 1834. He played a leading role in abolishing Slavery in the UK, and introduced restrictions on the employment of children. Grey's Monument in Newcastle was created to remember him. Earl Grey tea and Grey College, Durham are named after him.
