Reading aloud to children, particularly in an engaging manner, promotes emergent literacy and language development and supports the relationship between child and parent.

When parents hold positive attitudes towards reading, they are more likely to create opportunities for their children that promote positive attitudes towards literacy and they can help children develop solid language and literacy skills. 

When parents share books with children, they also can promote children's understanding of the world, their social skills and their ability to learn coping strategies.

What the Research Says

-Some children are pushed to learn to read too soon

-Developmentally, age 6 or 7 is when most are ready

-If they begin earlier on their own that is fine

-Finland does not teach children to read until age 7 and have the world's highest reading scores

-Read Aloud is about helping your children fall in love with print and want to keep reading their entire lives

Read in the language you are comfortable with
If you are a non-reader, there are other options available

-Audiobooks (recorded books that can be listened to on a digital device or on CD)

-e-Reader pens such as Leap Frog, which will read the text out loud

How to Prepare

Pre-read the book to make sure it is a good fit for your child

-Is it a topic they are interested in?
-Is the content appropriate for their age?

This also allows you time to think of questions to ask as you are reading to your child

-Basic questions to ensure understanding
-Prediction questions
-Comparison questions to things in their lives or other stories that they know

Practice Reading with Prosody-
In Reading, prosody refers to the expressiveness with which reading is done. It is the intonation, rhythm, and emphasis given to words and sentences when reading out loud. Prosody is a key component in reading fluency. (Morin 2014)
