LOVING ON OUR SENIORS
This year our Elementary staff and students were inspired to extend their classroom learning to include “Lovin’ on the Seniors.”  Our deep hope was that the challenges of the pandemic could provide a unique opportunity for students to explore their place in God’s story - bringing the love of Christ to some of the most vulnerable.

We know that God created people for community, and that cross-generational relationships are a beautiful part of His design for our interconnectedness.  And yet, the impact of sin in our hearts and in the world has led to brokenness and a disconnection between what these relationships are and what they were created to be.  COVID-19 has further compounded this disconnection by imposing isolation, which has been felt perhaps most of all by the elderly, many of whom are cut-off from interaction with others, especially children.

This is where we heard God inviting us to join him in his ongoing mission to redeem all that is broken.  Through letters, crafts, photos, flowers, drawings and zoom conversations, VCS students have been connecting with seniors both near and far - offering expressions of love and attention.  This is no small thing - it is sacred work.  Jesus instructed His followers to see and respond to the vulnerable, and what a journey it has been for seniors to share their joys and experiences with our students or to be uplifted with a simple encouragement card and Bible verse.  Our students have grown not only in academic skills but in sharing God’s love.

Indeed, God works in mysterious ways.  If He could convert the brutality of death on a cross into a glorious plan to save mankind, he can use the pandemic to shine His light through new relationships and connections between young and old.  Of course He can!  He is doing it - just check out the following pages to see students participating in God’s story of restoration.

We learned that God has a plan and He loves us. He created everything Joshua/Danica and made people.   Class   He gave us everything on earth to enjoy and take care of.
Genesis 1:28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”
Caring for God’s World:
Deep Hope: My deep hope is that the students come to know that God loves them. As we read the Bible stories, I hope they marvel at the Creation story, are troubled by the fall, and are filled with gratitude for God’s plan of a Rescuer – Jesus. Through the stories of Jesus ministry, I hope they learn more about love and compassion. I hope they come to understand that they have a part in God’s story. I hope they begin to understand the ministry of reconciliation given to us. 2 Corinthians 5:18–21

It is my hope that in learning more about plants and butterflies that the students are in awe of the Creator God who designed such wonders. I hope that though taking care of these creations the students will begin to understand their role as Earth Keepers.
It is my hope that in learning about loving one another that the students put into practice forgiving one another as Christ forgave us as well as show kindness. As the students look beyond our classroom, it is my hope that they will show empathy towards others. I hope that through taking care of people that students will begin to understand their role as Servant Workers.
It is my hope that as the students join in God’s plan to reach out to the Seniors, that their works of art, words of encouragement and pots of herbs proclaim God’s love and touch hearts.
