Mrs. Jones 2023-24
Welcome to 5th Grade!
Hello! My name is Mrs. Rani Jones. I will be your new 5th grade teacher. We are going to have an awesome year! I'm really looking forward to having you in my class.

Here's a little about me . . . I grew up in St. Petersburg, Florida, and enjoyed all that the "Sunshine State" had to offer! There were beautiful warm beaches, bike paths, and lots of sunshine! I danced every day while growing up, ballet is my favorite dance style. I went to a special performing arts high school when I was a teenager and loved spending my summers at intensive dance camps with the Joffrey Ballet, Boston Ballet and Hartford Ballet! I moved to Utah when I was in college to attend the University of Utah as a ballet major. I served a mission in Tucson, Arizona for my church. After my mission I returned to Utah to continue my education, and I decided to pursue a degree in Elementary Education from BYU.

I enjoy the arts, nature, and the four seasons of Utah! I love the beautiful sunsets and the majestic mountains here. I enjoy hiking, biking, dancing, piano, baking, reading, and spending time with my family. I have 3 beautiful children, Abigail, Emma, and James.

I enjoy teaching children and seeing their excitement about life and learning. I love learning new things and mastering new skills. I hope to share that joy with my 5th grade students this year!

Here's a Slice of What We'll Learn This Year!

Math: I am excited to help you master fractions and become confident with decimals, area/volume, and the basics of the metric system. We will also be working on problem solving strategies.
Literacy: We will be focusing on ensuring that all students have a strong phonics base in order to build accuracy and fluency in reading. We will also focus on developing comprehension of text. Our textbook is Journeys. We will frequently read information text connected to our Science and Social Studies standards. I encourage your child to read about current events and practice vocabulary and spelling at home.

Science: Students will learn about the characteristics and interactions of earth systems, properties of change and cycles of matter in ecosystems. We will learn how to think like scientists with many hands-on learning activities.

Music: Students will love music with Mrs. Bawden. Please read her welcome to school book.

Our theme this year will be centered around Lemons and Lemonade! There will be some “Easy, Peasy, Lemon Squeezy” moments in 5th grade when things are fun and easy! There will also be difficult concepts to learn and some challenge. But when we face our challenges with a smile, and figure out how to look for the bright side, we can make Lemons into Lemonade. With positive attitudes and a desire to do our best, life in 5th grade will be a “Slice of Heaven!”

Class Rules:

- Respect self
- Respect others
- Respect environment

When we follow the class rules, and work together as a team, our classroom will be a happy place where all of us feel comfortable, valued, and accepted. It will be a place where we can learn and grow and have a wonderful year!

When we follow the rules, there will be some fun individual and class rewards and even occasional class lemonade parties! The consequences for not following the rules will start with a warning. If you continue in that behavior, you will loose classroom privileges and rewards. When there is a pattern of misbehavior, your parents will be notified of the situation.

Learning at Home:
You will be encouraged to read 100 minutes a week, 20 minutes a night. Other regular assignments will include completing any work that was not finished in class and studying for upcoming tests. When you are absent, it will be your responsibility to find out what you missed and complete the work.
