I'm Kristina Holzweiss and I'm a school librarian. Before I became a librarian, I was a seventh-grade English teacher for nine years. In 2015, I was named School Library Journal of the Year Librarian of the Year. In 2018, I became a Library Journal Mover and Shaker.

I grew up in Hicksville, New York and liked to visit my public library. I also enjoyed it when the bookmobile arrived in my neighborhood. The bookmobile was like a library on wheels, and it would stop right in front of my grandparents' house. My grandfather collected tomatoes from his garden and my grandmother collected flowers from her garden. They gave them to me so that I could give them to the librarian in the bookmobile.

When I was invited to visit Scholastic's New York City office, I was really excited! I had read Scholastic's books since I was a little girl, and loved going to the book fair. Now I was able to visit the office.

When I visited Scholastic's office, I met with my editor and planned the themes of the book. When I came home, I explored ideas and researched science about robots, circuits, flying, and movement.

It took me a while to decide which projects to include in the books. I needed to make, test, and repair every project to do my best. Then I wrote how to make the projects step by step.

Photographing the steps took a long time. My sister Jen took picture of my sons Tyler and Riley. Each project required that each step be photographed to make it clear to the readers. After that, I needed to edit the writing. I had to make sure that every step I'd written coincided with the photographs.

After editing the writing for grammar, punctuation, spelling, and capitalization my editor and a photographer came to visit my library. The photographer took pictures of my children and their friends to put on the covers of the books.

After a few weeks I received an email from the graphic designer. The graphic designer designed the books using the photos and text. I needed to check all the pages to make sure everything was exactly as it should be. Here you can see some of the drafts I received with the comments. Writing books is not an easy task. It takes a lot of practice and many revisions.
