The “Stazione Mediopadana”, Reggio Emilia built mainly in steel, was designed by Santiago Calatrava to echo the form of a series of waves.

The wave motif gives the building a dynamic sense of movement. Each wave is formed by 25 portal frames in rectangular tube spaced at 1 metre intervals. The motive repeats itself for about 483 metres.

The structure has a variable width of between 35 and 50 metres and is about 20 metres in height. The steel structure is built around an existing reinforced concrete viaduct

The two sides of the building are slightly different in their form.

The cost of the structure was about 79 million Euros and 14,000 tonnes of steel were used in its construction.
