REMARKABLE FIND IN LUXOR

We have just had news of one of the most exciting archeological finds in decades! An expedition led by Lord Carlton, and his business partner, Mr Thomas Scott, has found an ancient tomb in the desert just outside Luxor.

Mr Scott first looked for the tomb last year, in a dig funded by the Egyptian Exploration Society, but he did not find it. A new license to dig at the site was applied for by both the Egyptian Exploration Society, and Mr Scott, backed by the famous Egyptologist Lord Frederick Carlton. Carlton and Scott were given permission.

They say the tomb has escaped the grave robbers of ancient times, and it is hoped its treasures are still inside it. We will bring you further details and pictures of the find as soon as we are able,

CHOLERA EPIDEMIC CLAIMS LIVES

The Egyptian Government has issued a health warning after a number of deaths by cholera. Outbreaks have been recorded in Cairo, Luxor and Aswan, and there are fears it will spread.

Households are reminded that they should boil all water before use, and take care with their hygiene. Those already affected by the disease should rest and take plenty of fluids.

The symptoms to look out for are a stomach upset with vomiting and diarrhoea, muscle cramps, a rapid heartbeat, and seizures.

ARTEFACTS SHOULD REMAIN IN EGYPT

Professor Farouk Mubarak, head of the Museum of Antiquities in Luxor, has called for a law to prevent the mass export of Egyptian antiquities to other countries.

“So much of our heritage is being taken away.” Professor Mubarak said, “It is time more was done to make sure that both our dead and their treasures remain where they belong, in Egypt.”

The announcement is well timed, in the light of the recent excavations near Luxor. Professor Mubarak has already spent time at the dig site, and has shared his concerns with the expedition leaders, Lord Frederick Carlton and Mr Thomas Scott. It remains to be seen whether they will listen to him.

CAMEL RACE IN THE DESERT

Last Saturday Mrs Grace Wintorpe held a tea dance in the gardens of the Grand Hotel in Cairo. The guests were entertained by Gaston Mercier’s Palm Court Orchestra, and some lively dancing took place. Afternoon tea was served on the lawns, with sandwiches, cakes, biscuits and ices, and the finest Imported champagne.

CAMEL RACE IN THE DESERT

Last week visitors to the area were lucky enough to watch a Bedouin camel race held by Sheik Al-Wari to celebrate the marriage of his eldest son. Twenty camels were raced over a four mile stretch of desert close to Cairo. The camels were decorated in bright colours, and stood out against the desert sand as they raced across the dunes. The race was won by a cousin of the groom, and the wedding celebrations could be heard going on late into the night.
