Reading your diary, I have discovered your beautiful hobbies and interests. Whilst going through the pages I was delighted to see how lovingly you talk about your art and I remained impressed with how much passion you put into your work. I amtouched by the way you talk about your uncle who inculcated this love of art in your soul. After poring over your journal, I was very intrigued to find art that you produced to make an idea on how you cultivated the talent on canvas and discovered such magnificent paintings.

Also, you talked about your life, which sadly ended after a long time of fulfillment and joy, even though you suffered from pycnodysostosis, which prevented you from enjoying some of your favourite activities.

Despite the impediments you were faced with, I highly appreciate the fact that you have no regrets regarding your life and were always a family person who cared deeply for his loved ones.

The metropolitan of Serres, Chrysanthos, asked me to rush to Dovista village and meet Emmanuel Papas. He had an important message for him. I set off to meet him and when I arrived at the foothills of mount Menikion I saw Dovista. I told him that his life and his family’s life was in danger because of the new Ottoman sultan who was very greedy and never satisfied no matter how much money Papas lent him in order to have the situation in Serres under control and as quiet as possible... His wife Faedra wanted to know which his intentions were and he said : “Our nation must find its way. Our nation is above everything. Don’t be afraid, I have a plan. Dimitris Ypsilantis, our leader, wrote to me to get ready for the revolution but I will go to Constantinople first to talk to Patriarch Chrigorios and get his blessing.” He advised his sons to be in charge of his shops in Serres, Vienna and Constantinople. He also advised his wife to be like a mother and a father for their 11 children as long as he would be away.

Dear diary, &nbsp;today it was a calm night and luckily everything went good. I wish every night would go like this night, but sometimes it is very stressful to get up every hour and ring the bell so the people living in the city know everything is fine. After I get up my family and I make breakfast together. After that I went to my second job because, the money I get for watching over the city isn´t enough to take care of my family so most of the time I am at work like today. I had some people bringing their shoes sop I could fix them. Many of them had holes in it or the sole was ripped apart from the rest of the shoe. While I was at work, my family stayed at home and cooked lunch for us. At 2 pm I came back from work , ate something and after that I went to sleep so I´m rested for the night. At 5pm I woke up from my nap and went into the forest to make some fire wood for the oven. After that we all ate soup together and enjoyed the evening infront of the carmine. At 8pm I put my children to bed. Then I started getting ready for my nightly duty. So now my night shift begins like every day and I hope everything works well. Good night diary…

Sir, you are an example of dedication in everything you do, putting your whole heart regardless of the project you dedicated your time to.

According to me, the zoom with Romanians students was great, it was nice to finally meet them. Even if my computer didn't work the way I wanted it to, I could hear them a bit. Maybe next time we should use our own equipment like they did, to avoid these problems. In fact, there aren't any webcams on the computers at school and the teacher's webcam didn't work either.

What I learned from this online meeting is that it's not as easy as you might think. You have to make yourself understood, articulate and speak very loudly. Of course, before meeting, I was a little bit stressed out because I'd never seen them before. To conclude, this was a constructive exchange, which enabled us to learn many things about Emmanuel Papas.

I was afraid of the video with the Greek school for several reasons : it was difficult to understand each other and therefore to communicate. I felt a lot of stress in the run-up to the meeting because we didn't know anyone when we arrived in front of the webcam. In my opinion, this kind of meeting is great to get to know the people you're talking to.

I was intrigued because Anastasia's life was interesting and it was a pleasure to discover a lot of things about Romania and Anastasia.

During the video conference with our Romanian partners, I was very stressed out but afterwards, I wasn’t anymore. I misunderstood one question but it was okay ! It was a very interesting and enriching online meeting ! I really liked it.

I liked the conference with the Greek partners very much. It was very interesting to speak with other people in English. I learned other words and if it’s possible I would like to start again. Thank you for this nice initiative.

The video brings awareness and culture about Greece’s History like Emmanouil Pappas, his business and what he brought for Greece. We learn his history in all precision, and it was very interesting. Even the conversation was nice because we talked in English and we tried to hold it, but it was too short.

The videoconference with our Romanian partners was a great way to enrich our general knowledge. We could learn a little more about our partners and their culture. We discovered one of their "ancestors, Anastasia, an emblematic Romanian woman whi lived in the 15th century. I found it interesting !

I really loved to communicate with the other country. We learnt much about Anastasia and Dracula. At least it was very fun despite the bad connection.

I really enjoyed discussing our respective subjects and to learn more about Emmanuel Papas. But I had difficulty in understanding some parts of the conversation during the video.

I found the online meeting rather complicated to understand ! It was difficult to understand our Greek partners because their class was very noisy and the camera didn't have good enough sound quality. But seeing our partners and talking to them was really cool !  And the organisation of the day was complicated because we only had 25 minutes to eat, which was very short.

I found this online meeting very interesting because it was a mix of culture and history. It has been a pleasure to could talk to Romanians because we learnt a lot about Dracula's story and they were really invested because it is their country's story. Moreover, their questions about Henri de Toulouse Lautrec were deep and highly sought-after.

It was very interesting to meet our Greek partners after five months of work. The biggest thing that I liked in this video conference iwa the fact that they were happy to see us. It made me feel better. But in spite of this, It was hard for me to speak because I was afraid. I was also stressed out too because I had never done this before. But anyway, It was very interesting to talk with other students and to learn more about Emmanuel Papas. But, it often was difficult to understand what they said because the sound was really bad. If there hadn’t been this problem, maybe we could have asked and answer to more questions. I asked the question : « What is a metropolitan ? ». They answered that a metropolitan is the person who is under the bishop.  Sometimes, It was hard to answer their questions because we didn’t know the answer. But anyway, the online meeting was a great experience and it was very interesting. If I had to do it again, I would do it again without any hesitation. Because, I liked it a lot even if there were some problems.

Hello Mr.Chrysafis. I am writing because I read your Diary Entry and it left me speechless, but I'm also interested in this story. I have to think about it all the time an it reminds me of the time when it was war in Germany (1940). I couldn’t imagine living at this difficult time, it had to be very terrible for the family and it really impressed me. I have all respect for the father because he sacrificed his life for others that they have to have a better one and to help them out of this mad situation. Also the job that as a doctor must be really hard. I hope he know that was he done was a very selfless act, very few people would do something like that for other people but I wish there were more people like him who are so helfpful. While reading the diary entry I got some questions which I am going to ask you now and I would be very happy I f you could answer them. Questions: How long could you manage this before you were caught? What about your family, when did you see them the last time? I have so many more questions which I'd love to ask after your reply. Did you know that Toulouse-Lautrec had an artistic AND culinary talent ? In addition to be an amazing painter, he was also a good cook ! He used to offer le bœuf à la Malromé to his guests, and rabbit paste (without rabbit !). Each time he created a new cooking recipe, he used to say : « Et voilà le dessert ! » His sense of humour was much liked by his friends and mistresses, such as his talent, his generosity and his inexhaustible desire to continue to revelling day and night. However, his growing popularity as an artist displeased his aristocratic parents ! Their son was becoming famous for « shocking » portraits of courtesans and cabaret dancers ! As his family was involved in politics, he was discouraged from pursuing his artistic dreams. And yet, he became one of the most popular French painters !

Dear Diary, today I woke up at five o’clock and left my appartement to get some wood and warm up my appartement. It took very long because the wood was heavy and I had to walk about 200 stairs. Then I woke up my family and we ate breakfast together. After that, the kids went to school and my wife began to wash my clothes and made bread. I went to my chair, to have a better view over the city. Every fifteen minutes I have to blow in a horn, so the city knows they are safe. After about seven hours, I took a little break and ate something. During I did this, my wife helped me with my task. Then I went about my business. It’s a hard job because I have to be attentive the whole time and the whole day because if the city is attacked, it’s my fault. But back to my flat. It’s usually cold up here, and the whole flat is slanted, as we live in a tower that has been tilted by the constant and strong winds over the years. Speaking of wind, there is a draught all the time because the walls are not very tight. I’m very tired now and I want to sleep, but I have to stay awake. I have to move on. I’ll get back to you if anything exciting happens.

the secret diary of Anastasios Chrysafis

Every first Sunday of December the inhabitants of the village commemorate the day of his death with a memorial service in the orthodox church of Saint Athanasios ,the church which he and his family first helped to be constructed A parade with students and soldiers accompanied by  with philarmonic music band of the village takes place at the square of the village. A traditional choir comprised by the locals sings Papas’s anthem.  Three running races are carried out at the same day. October 1820 Metropolitan Chrysanthos received a letter from Papas and read it loudly. Emmanuel wrote in it : ‘ I am writing from Constantinople. I have been initiated in an organisation, set up for the preparation of the revolution called “Filiki Eteria”. Ypsilantis appointed me as the leader and chief general of the revolution in Macedonia.’                                                                      May 1821 Emmanuel Papas went to Chalkidikiin central Macedonia to start the revolution. He gave all his countless money and fortune for the national struggle and he had many successful fights. Meanwhile , in Serres his wife and  three daughters were imprisoned by the Ottomans. From his eight sons those who were in the country all fought indifferent battlefields.                                                                      October 1821 Papas realised that his munitions and guns were not sufficient any more. Therefore he expected support from Ypsilantis but he could not stand by Papas since there were so many battlefields in Peloponnese. Papas decided to sail to Hydra island to ask for help and he urgently got on a boat Unfortunately, he died of heart attack while travelling. What he never died though was his offer and sacrifice for the nation !!! Anastasios Xrysafis (1853-1913)

He was born in 1853

Anastasios Chrysafis, doctor and Macedonian fighter, emerges as one of the great figures of the Macedonian Struggle. Although born in Serres from a poor family, he studied Medicine in Athens in 1875. After his marriage, he went to Vienna in 1882 to continue his studies.

He returned to Serres and served as the administrator of the Municipal Hospital of Serres. As the family doctor of the wealthy Turks, he won their clemency, helping to stop the persecution of the Greeks.

He donated a large part of his fortune to the Macedonian Struggle and was a member of the Orpheus Association of Serres. He was the mastermind of the organization of the Macedonian Struggle of Eastern Macedonia. With his son Konstantinos he carried weapons, which were kept in his family home in the village of Sitochori.

When the army was ordered to search his home looking for weapons and documents for the Macedonian Struggle, his wife Athanasia offered dinner to the soldiers to prevent her husband's archive from being destroyed. This saved many of his fellow fighters. Eventually he was arrested and imprisoned by the Bulgarians. On their withdrawal, the Bulgarians took him prisoner in Bulgaria and executed him with the others in Libunovo.

Dear Diary, Today is the 5th October 1898 and it was my first day as a towerman of Hildburghausen. In the morning I moved into the appartment above the townhall. Whoop Whoop. It was so difficult because I have a wife and 3 children, the children are so young and its so complicated to move with a young family. For lunch, my wife cooked oatmeal with fruit. It was so tasty. Mhmm. After lunch, I went to work. I work as a handyman in Hildburghausen. At 7pm my work ends. When I came home, my wife Gerlinde -Hermenegild was already putting our children Anastasia-Seraphina-Katy, Brigitte-Marry- Hermenegild the second, Hildegard-Daisy-Hermenegild the third to bed. It is so dangerous in the flat, because it’s so high above the city. In the evening I heat the fireplace with cole from the basement. Often my wife and I take turns looking out of the window and we both became some sleep but never is it without problems, my childs, they wake up in the middle of the night and it is very complicated to organize it. The job as a towerman is pretty hard but I work to provide for my family. In conclution I can say, the first day was so hard but I think once I settle in, everything will get better and easier. After the day I exchange ideas with my wife and talk to her about the day. After such a strenuous day I just fall into my bed. Goodbye

The Historic Building of the Association "Orpheus" Serron

The Association was founded in 1905 at a time when the city of Serres was still under Turkish occupation, while at the same time, the Bulgarian Committees began to operate. To Bulgarianize the Greeks of Macedonia, the Committees started to loot and persecute the Greek population. At this historic moment, 12 individuals of diverse social backgrounds and professions have decided to establish an organization named the "Orpheus Association." While officially designated as a Music-Gymnastics Association, its primary purpose was a clandestine political and armed Organization. During the Macedonian war, the building of Orpheus was the heart and stronghold of Greek defense in our region.

Dear Journal, Today was a day filled with both action and emotion in Bran Castle. As I walked through the grand halls of this ancient fortress, I couldn't help but feel the weight of my responsibilities as a princess resting upon my shoulders. The morning began with a sense of anticipation as I prepared for a meeting with the council. We discussed matters of the kingdom, making decisions that would shape the lives of our people. It was a reminder of the immense privilege and burden that comes with my title. In the afternoon, I found solace in the castle's library, surrounded by shelves upon shelves of books. As I dived into the pages, I lost myself in stories of adventure and romance, momentarily escaping the pressures of my royal duties. The characters in those tales seemed to leap off the pages, their tales of bravery and love resonating deeply within me. However, the tranquility of the day was shattered when news reached me of an attack on our kingdom. My heart raced with fear, but I knew I had to act quickly to protect our people and defend our lands. Gathering my courage, I donned my armor and rallied our loyal knights. Together, we rode out into battle as the sound of clashing swords filled the air. The adrenaline surged through my veins as I fought alongside my comrades. Every strike I made was fueled by a strong determination to protect our home.

Exchanging messages at the forum of etwinning was a very nice experience for us!!! We got to know Madame Desbassayns from Reunion Island through the students'information.

We are really happy we had the chance to exchange information about important people of history.

Today was a long and a hard day for me, as always. Sometimes, like yesterday I think about changing my boring life but today I realized, that I am helping the town and if danger is coming I can safe people’s life. But now to my day. I am working all the time, that means I sit next to a window and look outside. The whole night nothing happened, so I had nothing to do. My daughter couldn’t sleep last night and because she knows I am up all night and day, she came to me and asked if she could help me with my work. I got food quickly and we sat down. After a while she fell asleep and my wife carried her to the bed. When I saw her sleeping, I got tired too, but I can not sleep so I just got up and made a bit sport. As I was fit again, I sat back down and looked out the window. The time flew and the sun was rising. It was beautiful, so my wife came to me and we watched it together. We make that sometimes, because my wife tries to help me staying awake. I think its hard for my wife, because she has to because she has to look after the kids most of the time. Of course I am at home so I am there for them, but I have to look at the town, as my job. My wife and I talked about that in the morning and everytime she says that she is good with that, so I believe her. After a few hours my kids woke up and my wife made breakfast for all of us. Then they left and went outside for a walk and to get firewood. I was alone at home until evening, when they came home again. But like ever, over all this time I worked. Then we made dinner and I quickly took the kids to bed. I also washed myself, but directly after that, I sat back in front of the window. And that was my day, see you tomorrow.

Dear Anastasios Krysafis, I found this letter two days ago and I just finished reading it. I am deeply concerned about what the letter reads. I was shocked that I found this letter, because I think it wasn’t meant for me. But still it found me. I was thinking all night about the letter and I have some questions concerning it. What country are you talking about when you said country with freedom and no invaders? Who are you exactly? And why are you a fighter and doctor at the same time? What land are you even fighting for and what was the cause of the war? Couldn’t you just escape all that and live in freedom and peace instead of going to war and killing people with their family’s now hating the land you fight for? Why would you have to hurry to bring the weapons? Who are your kids and can you tell me where I could find them? If I meet your kids canI tell them about you being a hero and fighting for peace and freedom in your land? I understood some parts of the letter but there are still many questions unsolved. I would assume you can’t message me again but maybe you could leave behind a hint to all these questions or tell someone you trust about your experiences and let them tell your stories to the world. If you are still alive at the moment the letter reaches you, it would be very nice if you could answer me or if I could meet you and you tell me about the war and answer my questions yourself. It would be a pleasure to talk to you and find out what you did during the war and why you reacted the way you did. Dear Diary, Today is the 18th&nbsp;November 1811 In the morning I got up at 5.30 am and just like an hour later I got a call that there was a fire and I should watch over the city and where it spreads . After the fire was put out and nobody was hurt&nbsp;I just sat there and watched over the city and I was hoping that the day would be quiet and nothing else would happen. My apartment where I live is very high above the city so I get a beautiful view over the city . In the noon I went to the basement to grab some coal to heat the Apartment . I´ve been a Towerman for one week . Its been difficult for me, my wife and my 3 children Matthew-Wolfram , Waldemar-Siegfried, Brunhilde-Adelheid&nbsp;to move in to this place but we can live with it at least were not sleeping on the street because I don’t want my kids to live like this I know its not much but at least its something. At 2pm my wife cooked food for our family she made soup. In the afternoon I got to my second job because just a Towerman doesn’t pay all my payments that I have to pay so my second Job is a Handyman . I was back home at 8pm so my children were home from school my wife Meredith cooked lunch for us but after we ate I was so tiered so I went to sleep till 2am after I got up I went to my job as a Towerman . I have to say to be a Towerman and have a second job is pretty hard but I do it because I want my kids to have a good life and don’t want us to be hungry all day. Dear diary Today I woke up at 11 am, because last Night I needed to stay up to watch for fires or robbers. But luckily nothig really happened and it was a calm night The first thing I did in the morning was to wake up my kids and play with them after that I blew the hour the first time of the day. From then I did this every hour. Then I had breakfast, my wife made it and it was really delicious. In the morning I didn’t do really much, But in the afternoon I detected a thunderstorm and I immedeately warned the people off the city. Because of the thunderstorm an it got really windy and the towerflat startet shaking a lot, because im that high above the ground. Because the flat is a bit small it can really get scary if it shakes that much, but by now I am used to it. Later that day I went to the market to get some things, it suprises me every time how high above the ground I really live.by now the thunderstorm was luckily over and I could relaxe again. Then I went to sleep for 2 hour because it is going to be a long Night. After I woke up nothing really happened. In the evening I winded the clock like every day. At 9 pm I had dinner with my family and then said good night to my 2 children. After that I prepared some food for the Night. In the following hours I just sat in my chair and watched about city, luckyli nothing happen and it was a relaxed Night. Then I just went to sleep at 6 am.

The secret diary has been lost or it has simply disappeared. Surprisingly, it is discovered in 2024 by a bunch of teenagers. They are so puzzled that they decide to write a letter from the future to its diarist.

Dear diary , Today is the 16th of November 1837. The weather is enjoyable, the sky is blue and the temperature is warm. I can see palm trees that are about to give coconuts, my dog running in my garden between mango trees and my slaves working in the sugar cane fields. I'm very proud of what I achieved and the legacy I created. The fields bear the marks of their hard work, and every stone here tells how they contributed. I see the tired faces of my slaves as they work like horses. Villele is rich because of their sweat and hard work. I feel torn between being happy for all they've built and sad for the injustices they endured. When I started this I didn't feel any empathy but as time goes, these people suffer. But that's how life works, some get happiness and the unlucky has to work until they die.

I read it and understood the message and the most common things but there were some words and phrases which I didn’t quite understand. I understood that you wrote this letter to your family and you probably were a Soldier and a doctor who fought for Greek and freedom in his land. Dear diary Today I received a new job. I am the towerman of Hildburghausen now. I live in a tower in the townhall of Hildburghausen. My job is to have a look at the city from above. If enemies are entering the city I have to warn the people livng in the town, but if everything is fine, I have to blow my horn. In my apartment I have 4 rooms, a kitchen, a bedroom for the whole family, a little living room and a bathroom. With me are my wife and my 2 children. It’s quite tight there, but at the same time it’s so calming living up there. But there are not just good things about living in the tower. I have to watch the city all day long, even at night, But me and my wife take shifts, that means I am watching during the morning, afternoon and evening. And my wife is watching at night. So it’s fine, because I can watch various people walk on the marketplace to go to work or go to school. Right now it’s afternoon and no one’s outside, so I have time to write this diary entry. In the morning, while I am watching the city, my wife and my children buying supplies for us. I think they are coming back, so I will help them prepare the food. You will hear from me again tomorrow.

Celebrations, customs and competitions to honour Emmanuel Papas and keep his memory alive.

The torch relay is a custom which takes place on 23rd March in order for everybody to remember the event of Papas’s  leaving Constantinople (today’s Instabul) to go to “Holy mountain” a monasteries region  in the peninsula of Halkidiki and start the revolution in Macedonia. The date of 23 March 1821 was the day that Emmanuel Papas with his son Ioannis arrived at the monastery of Esfigmenou and was welcomed by the monks  in the ‘Holy mountain” who relied on him to start the fight .

What is Belle Epoque ? Belle Epoque was a period which started around 1880 and ended before the first world war in 1914. It was a prosperous era with stars, science, education and culture flourishing. What does Henri de Toulouse Lautrec's illness mean ? The word pycnodysostosis derives from a Greek word and it refers to an illness which means ‘dense bones’ which Henri de Toulouse Lautrec suffered from. Was he a dwarf ? He was a dwarf Why was he depressed ? He was depressed because of his figure and because  his girlfried left him Does Malromé Castle still exist ? His mother’s castle “Malromé” still exists. It is now a luxurious hotel with a famous and expensive restaurant. It is a place of rest. Does the villa he bought still exist? The villa Henri had bought himself also exists. At which age did he die? He died at the age of 36

Yes, her job was to manage the slaves on her property. She used her slaves especially to maintain her house and for plantations. She had more than 460 slaves. 2.Did the slaves belong to her and were not free ? Yes, they did. They were not free. as they lived in houses in her estate. 3.Were the slaves’ children born to be slaves ? They became slaves indeed. 4. What was madame Desbassyns birthplace ? She was born in Saint Paul in Reunion Island. 5.Did she regret having slaves ? We can not know this but in her will, she left her 28 best slaves pensions, land, corn and other things. 6.Why did she keep a secret diary ? She kept it for memories.

He is the guardian of the city, he has to warn the population of the city when he sees a storm approaching, a fire starting, enemies come to attack or anything else that could disturb the peace of the city. Being a towerman back in the 19. Century was very dangerous , because the building he lived in was so high, that when a big storm hit the city, the flat was blown away.

Many years ago, a towermen lived in “Hildburghausen” to watch the city. When enemies come near the village, he gives a call with a horn. He can see all over the city from the tower he also lived with his wife and three kids there in the “Türmerstube” which translates to tower apartment. In this apartment he had two beds where the whole family slept. He had a kitchen a working space and one bedroom. If he wanted to go to the toiled, he had to pee in a bucked. It was a hard job.

A Towerman is a historical person who protected the city from, for example fires, thunders and other situations that could be dangerous for the people in the village from 1524 and 1955. He would stay up all night at a high spot to have an overview. They blew off the hours, which is why this work was often done by trumpeters and musicians or even Executioner.

The last towerman lived in the towermans apartment in 1919. His name was Louis Fischer

The Towerman lived in a flat in the city hall. The flat is on the highest floor of the building and includes the tower of the city hall. It is verry little and verry cold. The flat is crocked because of wind and weather. The towerman lived there with his whole family which includes his wife and up to three kids. Because the flat was so high up, the family stayed up there most of the time. The towerman´s main job was keeping an eye on the city from above. He should alarm other people when there was a fire or anything else in nighttime. He also had to ring a bell every hour so the people knew everything is okay. If he didn’t ring the bell and blowed in a horn, something was up. The money he got for doing this wasn´t enough to take care of his family so most of the towerman´s had a second job. Most of them were cobbler.
