What Skills Are Needed to understand the content area?

Identify the main idea &amp; supporting details. Locate specific facts and details.&nbsp; Organize by patterns of logic or interpretation. Adjust the rate of reading and focus for purpose, difficulty, and content.

Adapt literacy practices to all content areas. Read for comprehension. Keep in mind, phonemic awareness does NOT equal literacy.

Students may struggle with understanding informational texts. Pivotal Point in reading level = Grade 3 Students will never gain new knowledge if literacy is absent.

Content Literacy- The ability to read or write, specific to a domain of knowledge.

Literacy is not just for ELA classes. Literacy is the ability to read or write. Content Area = a domain of knowledge and skill in an academic program.

Examples of content areas include: English (ELA), math, science, social studies, or science.

1. Focus attention on how ideas are developed 2. Discuss logic and critical thinking in relationship to the text 3. Give students skills to transfer knowledge across disciplines 4. Integrate writing activities in conjunction with reading the text

Select key vocabulary &amp; concepts.&nbsp; Teach organizational skills. Focus on cues from the reading to promote meaning.&nbsp; Supplement materials and texts.
