Filipino Americans are the second-largest Asian American group in the nation and the third-largest ethnic group in California, after Latinas/os and African Americans. The October observance commemorates the first recorded presence of Filipinos in the continental United States, which occurred on October 18, 1587, when “Luzones Indios” came ashore from the Spanish galleon Nuestra Señora de Esperanza and landed at what is now Morro Bay, California. Father and Son Readers...

I spent a great Thanksgiving break in Buffalo, New York with family and friends. My father is a great reader, and by chance we were reading the same book over the break.

New library policies related to food and gaming.

Food and Beverages: Consumption of food is prohibited in the library and on the library balcony at all times. Any food must be zipped up in students’ bags and out of sight. Students may drink from non-disposable water bottles or thermoses with tight-fitting caps or lids. Disposable cups must be left on the desk at the library main entrance. Food and drink are no longer permitted on the library balcony. Gaming: Gaming is no longer allowed in the library. Neither JCP or personal gaming equipment are allowed in the library.

Scholastic Book Fairs Rolls Back Option to Exclude Books with POC's and/or LGBTQ Characters

Facing pressure from right-wing ideologues, Scholastic Bookfairs facilitated the exclusion of books that feature people of color and/or LGBTQ characters. The company grouped many of these titles in a collection called "Share Every Story, Celebrate Every Voice" that school officials could choose to exclude from the book fair. NPR reports that, "Scholastic is reversing course, saying it will no longer separate diverse stories for school book fairs after weeks of mounting backlash from educators and authors." <a href="https://www.npr.org/2023/10/25/1208419749/scholastic-book-fair-diverse-stories-apology#:~:text=Getty%20Images-,Scholastic%20says%20it%20will%20stop%20offering%20the%20controversial%20collection%20of,book%20fairs%20starting%20in%20January.&amp;text=Scholastic%20is%20reversing%20course%2C%20saying,backlash%20from%20educators%20and%20authors.">Read more from NPR.</a>
