APPEARANCE

Tigers have various features to enable them to live and survive in their environment. They are very large creatures and grow to about 4 metres long and 1 metre high. In addition, they can weigh between 75-300kg.
These mammals have dense fur that is orange with dark, black stripes which are vertical. However, the colour of their fur depends on the area that they live in. The reason for the stripes is to help the animal to become camouflaged in its surroundings. These felines have large claws (up to 10cm). This helps them to catch hold of prey and kill them and to climb up trees. They also sharpen their claws by scratching them on trees.

Siberian tigers are the largest type of tiger species. They have manes which other tigers do not have.

Sumatran tigers have darker fur and much narrower stripes than other species. They are smaller than the Siberian tigers.

DIET

Tigers are predators because they stalk and hunt for their food . The main part of these species diet is large mammals: boar, goats and antelope. They do eat smaller animals (like birds or even insects), carcasses from other kills, and sometimes they kill livestock as a result, farmers have to kill the tigers.
Did you know that these felines are very good at swimming, so they can cross most rivers and lakes to catch their prey.

HABITAT

Tigers only live in Asia, they can be found in (China, India, Russia, North Korea, Siberia and Sumatra). These creatures have been hunted for about a thousand years for their skin and body parts and also Chinese medicine. Their habitats such as, rain forests , savannas, grasslands and swamps are being destroyed due to farming, road building and cutting down trees. There are only 4000 tigers left in the wild, therefore they are now endangered.

In conclusion, the tiger is a very adaptable wild wonder living in a tough habitat. In the future these amazing creatures could become extinct. However, conservation is helping to protect them and live as they should be in the wild.
