The Solar System

This is planet Earth, the 3rd planet from the Sun and is where we live on. It is small, terrestrial, and rocky. It is mainly made up of ocean. Earth's atmosphere is made up of Nitrogen and is thick enough for humans, plants, and animals to live on. One day on Earth lasts 24 hours and is the 3rd planet from the Sun.

Uranus is the 7th planet from the Sun. Like Jupiter and Saturn, its atmosphere is mainly made up of Hydrogen and Helium. Uranus in particular has methane in its atmosphere, which is why it's blue! It has 13 rings around it and it spins around on its side.

This is the planet Mercury. It's the 1st planet from the Sun and is the smallest planet in the solar system. The surface is not smooth, but rather covered in craters. One full day on Mercury lasts 59 days on Earth. A fun fact about me is that I can be seen without a telescope!

This is the Sun. It's a hot glowy ball of gas that is a star. Its gravity holds the Solar System together and is 93 million miles away from Earth. Because of its light, plants and animals on Earth would not be able to live.

Neptune is the 8th planet from the Sun and is the last in our solar system. Its atmosphere is made up of a thick fog but is very cold and windy. Like Uranus, Neptune also has methane in its atmosphere, so it is also blue. Some people call Neptune an ice giant. Voyager 2 is the only spacecraft that has visited Neptune.

Saturn is the 6th planet from the Sun and has the biggest rings around it. There are 7 main rings that are made up of ice and rock. Like Jupiter, Saturn is also made up of gas. Hydrogen and Helium in particular. Just like Jupiter, one day lasts 10 hours!

This is the planet Venus. It is the 2nd planet from the Sun. It has a thick atmosphere of gas made up of Carbon Dioxide. Venus is the hottest planet because it traps heat and has mountains and volcanoes on it! It takes 243 days on Earth to spin around once.

Mars is the 4th planet from the Sun and is very small. The reason why it is red is because of rusty iron on its surface. Just like Earth, it has polar ice caps, volcanoes, and canyons. Rovers have only been sent to Mars. Rovers take pictures and measurements of Mars.

Jupiter is the 5th planet from the Sun and is the biggest. It has lots of storms and the Great Red Spot is an example. Jupiter has a thick atmosphere made up of mostly Hydrogen and Helium. One day on Jupiter lasts 10 hours and it has 80 moons!
