Chapter 4: Why doctors and researchers were important during COVID-19

     You probably go to the doctors when you are sick, right? Well during COVID-19, it was a big deal. If you tested positive, you would immediately have to go into quarantine. Which is hard staying inside for such a long time. But, for that to happen, you need a doctor. For the vaccine to be made, you would need researchers. I asked a couple people if they agree, and one person who did agree, one of them said “Because they saved many people.” In fact, most people agree. Doctors and researchers were important during COVID-19 because they saved lives, they helped people in need, and some doctors died from saving lives. In this essay, I will tell you why doctors and researchers were important during COVID-19.

    One reason why doctors and researchers were important during COVID-19, is because they saved lives. This person named Max, was already suffering from cancer, and then he caught COVID-19. Which COVID-19, affects the lungs, so Max had a very hard time breathing. So, he went to the doctor, and the doctor worked very hard, sweating and wearing a mask to cover his mask. After many tiring weeks, Max finally was done with COVID-19. Sadly, he still had cancer. Doctors always try their best to save lives. But as they say, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” so try always being healthy.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;So? Do you agree with me that doctors and researchers were important during COVID-19? Doctors and researchers were important during COVID-19 because they saved lives, they helped people in need,&nbsp; and most importantly, some doctors died from saving patients.

Symptoms &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;When you have COVID-19, you first have to know if you have the symptoms. Some of the most common symptoms are: loss of taste, sore throat, fever, and finally and/or a cough. While some of the rare symptoms that elderly and medical issue people may come over is shortness of breath because COVID-19 is a respiratory illness. This is because they have a weaker immune system, so they can’t fight off the virus as well as a healthy person.

Is it dangerous? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Is it dangerous? Not really. An average person would not suffer as much as a elderly or medical issue person. It would be like catching a common cold, and actually it is in the common cold family, and in addition to that, it is also related to SARS. (severe acute respiratory syndrome)

Pandemic: A virus spreading worldwide

Epidemic V.S. Pandemic &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;An epidemic is a virus only spreading around a country or a small area. There are two types of epidemics. The one most people think of, is where it spreads from person to person by coughing, sneezing, etc. The other type is where an insect or liquid has the disease in it. For example, a mosquito can spread malaria, and a flea can spread bubonic plague. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A pandemic is a virus spreading all over the world. A pandemic is way more effective to the world. Pandemics normally happen when it is a new virus, because nobody is immune, so the virus can affect anybody it wants to.&nbsp;

Immune: When no one has a virus so no one's body knows how to fight a virus

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The professional would give the results a day later, and if it was positive, that meant that I officially had COVID-19 and I would have to be quarantined. If it was negative, I would probably have a common cold.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;When I did it, the people there were dressed very protected, with a shield mask on their face and a very odd suit. There was a shield in between them and me, and they were holding a stick to do the test. I heard many people talking, it was definitely on the busier side. The stick went up my nose, and it felt awfully weird. When I was done, my nose was nonstop itchy from the test. We then went back from the car to our house, then I and I flopped onto my bed and then I must have fallen asleep. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The next day, the results came out and my mom had some bad news. “Daisy, sadly, you were tested positive.” said my mother sadly. So then later, the government called my mom, saying that I couldn’t go to school.

My possibilities &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I missed school and I wasn’t allowed to go outside. I was stuck at home, doing nothing. I walked to the living room very slowly. I was struggling just to sit down! My very kind mother, willing to do anything to make me feel better, gave me medicine which tasted disgusting. It was the same thing over and over again. I was getting very tired of taking so long to just walk from room to room. I was allowed to go online if I wanted to, but I didn’t want to because I would be the only one who was online. All I heard was silence except for my mother. I was stuck at home, doing nothing.

After getting COVID-19 &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;When I was finally done being sick, I could finally go to school. It definitely didn’t feel like I needed to blow my nose every second. My throat felt very weird from not being sore. I felt so good as I jumped around outside and smelt the fresh air. It was a very good feeling.

     So, next time you don’t wash your hands, think. Your germs may spread to other people. Then you may be the one who starts a pandemic!&nbsp; You wouldn’t want that would you? Also, the next time you greet someone, maybe you should do one of the things in chapter 1. 

     The second reason why doctors and researchers were important during COVID-19 is because they helped people in need. People in poor countries don’t have enough money to get the vaccine, so, this person named Dr. Marcella Nunez-Smith helped some countries and gave vaccines for free. She teaches about medicine and public health, and then one day she got assigned to help fight COVID-19, and helped people in need. She thinks that all people should have equal value. Even though she wasn’t a researcher or a doctor, she helped a lot by giving vaccines.

     The third reason why doctors and researchers were important during COVID-19 is because some doctors died from saving patients. Doctors always try their best to make patients better, and sometimes they sacrifice so much that they even sacrifice their lives. For this reason, doctors are a very important job and especially during COVID-19, they were very important.

Some people may think that doctors and researchers aren’t important because they might die, which they don’t want. However, research shows that researchers and doctors were important during COVID-19 because we wouldn’t have as many people as we do now, because many of the people would have died. We are safe from any virus because doctors and researchers are experts about viruses and normally are the ones that make the vaccine. To add on, I did a survey, and only 1 single person picked that doctors and researchers were not important during COVID-19, out of 15 people.

How the Virus Spreads &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The virus normally spreads because nobody is immune, so because of this reason, the body doesn’t know how to fight the virus, then people tend to take longer to heal, and in that time they could spread the virus. The effect of this is that many people get the virus, and then since a lot of people are out and sick, places close. And you may have to do your school or job online. Another way and the more common way, is through tiny droplets of the virus, from coughing, sneezing, etc. The bigger droplets only stay for a few minutes, which is still enough to make someone else catch the virus, but smaller droplets can stay in the air for days, and sometimes weeks, which is more than enough time for the virus to spread to multiple people. That’s why people should cover their mouth with their elbow when they cough, sneeze, etc so that it doesn’t spread to other people.

Social Distancing and Masks &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;During COVID-19, people had to social distance and wear masks. What you were forced to do, is to be 2 meters apart (6 feet) apart. The only person you were allowed to be next to is your family members and close friends. In addition to that, we had to wear masks everywhere except our homes and when we were eating. We had to wear it at school, outside, public places, etc. People had to wear it for 3 years straight, and it started to feel normal for most people. Which is pretty shocking, since you had to wear masks. Which, if you don’t wear it for a long time and start wearing it again, it is not comfortable.

Maskes: A cover that prevents others from getting sick

Which Virus? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;COVID-19 is the virus called SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) CoV-2. COVID-19 got its name from COVID which means coronavirus, and it also started in 2019. To add on, it started in Wuhan, China, and it is unknown how it started. Some scientists believe it came from a bat and then mutated, and other scientists believe that it came from seafood.

Mutated: When a virus changes so that it can do different things

Starting Out &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;COVID-19 officially became a pandemic in 2020. When COVID-19 started, it was a very sudden change, and most people were very scared. Most schools had to go online. Any jobs with sports were postponed because they couldn’t practice online. The author of Coronavirus in Sports and Entertainment by Margaret J. Goldstein says, “Avoiding COVID-19 was difficult for athletes since many sports involve close contact between competitors and teammates. The National Basketball Association (NBA) was near the end of its regular season when COVID-19 hit the United States.” In other words, this means that because of COVID-19 the NBA (National Basketball Association) had a very hard time to play any basketball. In addition to that, if you didn’t have a job with physical activity, then you would have to do your job online. You also had to wear a mask to go anywhere.

Did you know that over six-million people died from COVID-19? COVID-19 affected many people’s lives. People couldn’t have fun. For example, most amusement parks were closed, restaurants were closed, almost everything was closed. It was very hard to do anything with friends. Any jobs had to be done online. When you read this book, you will find out a lot about COVID-19

How to Keep a Virus From Spreading &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;When you do a handshake, or anything with touching hands, consequently, you are spreading germs or you are taking germs from the other person. If you still want to greet each other, and also keep your germs to yourself, you could do a high five, or a fist bump, which has only a couple germs spread because only a little bit of area on your hand is touching, but the one with almost no germs transferred is an air high five or a wave. So, next time you are going to greet someone, maybe try these instead. In comparison, you will have a lot less germs on your hand. Washing your hands also helps. It helps because all the germs for instance, from outside, have millions of germs, and then you touch the ground. Then you come inside and then you touch everything. Now all the things you touched, have the germs you have. Then someone touches something you touched, and they have the germs too. On the other hand, if you wash your hands, all the germs are gone and now you don’t have to worry about touching your food, things, etc.

What is Quarantine? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Wait. First we need to tell what a quarantine is. A quarantine is when people are forced to stay at home because they are sick. Yes, it seems bad, but it helps with the pandemic. It helps the pandemic because it stops the person who is sick from spreading the virus. If everyone who is sick went into quarantine, no one would get sick, but sadly, with COVID-19, some people with it may not feel sick at all and then they spread the virus because they don’t know that they are sick. For instance, my sister tested positive, which means she has COVID-19. Negative means that you have some other sickness. Even though she did a COVID-19 test, she felt not even close to being sick.

How It Happened &nbsp;March 7, 2021 &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;When I woke up, I felt a little sick. I walked to my mom’s room, and it felt like I couldn’t breathe! As I slowly walked to my mothers room, I was thinking what had I caught. I told my mother,&nbsp; “Mom, I feel sick.” My mother asked,&nbsp; “Daisy, are you sure that you feel sick?”&nbsp; “Yes.” I responded. So my mother did a COVID-19 test on me, and it tickled a little bit. After I did it, I was positive! I was shocked, and I knew what COVID-19 was, which made it even more worse, because I was panicking a lot.

My mother was also shocked, and she drove me to the doctor, where they could do a COVID-19 test by a professional, just to double check. “Oh my goodness Daisy! I really hope that you don’t have COVID-19!” My mom said in the car, and took a deep breath. “If you feel sick, you might have COVID-19!”
