6 year old Tommy always made fun of little kids for being sick. Until one day the sickness struck in the back. He felt so tired and weak most of the time. He didn't even want to play with Matchbox cars. He didn't even feel good enough to play with his friends. Tommy's parents knew something was wrong but they didn't know what, they took him to the hospital. The doctor took a lot of tests. Tommy's parents are scared when they heard in the diagnosis-leukemia. Tommy was at the hospital for 5 months.
He missed his friends and the entire summer.

After 10 months Tommy started to feel a little stronger. His parents were there with him the whole time. The doctors and the nurses were great.
The treatments were working and Tommy felt like he was able to go home.
And just in time for Christmas too. On Christmas Eve Tommy slept in his bed for the first time since February.

On Christmas morning he awoke to see a tree with a special box underneath it. Out jumped a puppy, who he named Rex. The puppy group and Tommy grew, stronger and stronger. 9 years later, Tommy (now a volunteer at the hospital) and Rex the puppy (now a healthy full grown dog) still visits the hospital every year. Now Rex and Tommy go to the hospital or Tommy was sick and cheer up kids that are sick.
