Welcome

from Esther Cook, Director

It is with much excitement that I share with you this first update from the Thames Gateway TSH. It has been a privilege to meet with colleagues across the Medway and North Kent regions over the past few weeks as we begin to shape our new partnership.

As we look towards the end of an extremely challenging year, and begin to plan for new opportunities, it is timely to reflect on the people at the heart of our educational communities. As a sector which exists to see communities flourish, we are so very aware of the commitment, and personal dedication shown by teachers and school staff across our society. It is investment in these colleagues, and a desire to provide support which enhances their working lives, which drives our organisation. Overarching this aim is the fundamental and shared belief that our incredible children, who have faced such a unique set of challenges over the past months, will be given the best conditions in which to thrive, when the adults who invest in them have everything they need to succeed. I hope that this update, and the body of work it represents, will resource you and your colleagues, as we together meet our aim to deliver professional development which shapes the lives of our children and young people.

As this offer is constructed and rolled out it is fully dependent on our partnerships and relationships. Please do get in touch with us directly with any further information, feedback, questions or ideas.

Early Career Framework

The early career framework (ECF) reforms will create a step change in support for early career teachers, providing a funded entitlement to a structured 2-year package of high-quality professional development. The reforms are part of the government’s teacher recruitment and retention strategy, which aims to improve the training and development opportunities available to teachers.

The early career framework is the evidence base which underpins this new entitlement for early career teachers’ professional development. It sets out what all early career teachers should learn about, and learn how to do, during the first 2 years of their careers.

Schools have three options in choosing how to deliver the ECF to their Early Career teachers. Schools can choose:

- a funded provider-led programme
- to deliver their own training using DfE-accredited materials and resources
- to design and deliver their own ECF-based induction

Appropriate Body

Thames Gateway TSH are expanding our professional and leadership development offer by offering our services as an ECT Appropriate Body.

Working with our current, and growing partnership of schools, we are delighted to be able to present this offer, which draws on our expertise in teacher development; our exceptional administrative support and our established body of school to school support partners.

Cost for this work is graduated depending on a school’s choice in their delivery of the Early Career Framework. For schools delivering the ECF through a fully funded Full Induction Programme our costs will be £200/ECT (£100/Yr/ECT)

National Professional Qualifications

The National Professional Qualifications (NPQs) provide training and support for teachers and school leaders at all levels, from those who want to develop expertise in high quality teaching practice, such as behaviour management, to those leading multiple schools across trusts.

We are delighted to be working with Leadership Learning South East (LLSE) to deliver the reformed NPQ framework across Medway, Gravesham and Dartford and the wider area of Kent.

The new NPQ frameworks are evidenced based and ensure a clear path of professional development building on the learning from ITT core content framework and the new ECF.

Courses will begin in November 2021 and February 2022 .

The new suite of NPQs are -

Leading Behaviour and Culture (NPQLBC)
Senior leadership (NPQSL)
Headship (NPQH)
Executive Leadership (NPQEL)

Professor John Hattie is an award-winning education researcher and best-selling author with over 25 years of experience examining what works best in student learning and achievement. His research, better known as Visible Learning, is a culmination of over 25 years synthesizing more than 1,500 metaanalyses comprising more than 90,000 studies involving over 300 million students around the world. He has presented and keynoted in over 350 international conferences and has received numerous recognitions for his contributions to education. His notable publications include Visible Learning, Visible Learning for Teachers, Visible Learning and the Science of How We Learn, Visible Learning for Mathematics, Grades K-12, and, most recently, 10 Mindframes for Visible Learning.

INITIAL TEACHER TRAINING (ITT)

We are delighted to be a lead school for Kent and Medway Training, and to work in partnership with them to align our programs from Initial Teacher Training through to the early career framework and beyond.

We are proud to support teachers on their journey into the profession and in the subsequent years as they face new challenges and wish to further their knowledge and career.

KMT has trained teachers for 25 years and works with 8 School Direct Lead Schools who are offering training opportunities in over 45 Secondary Schools and over 30 Primary Schools in Medway, Maidstone, Tonbridge, Gravesend, Dartford, South East London and Deal.

KENT & MEDWAY MATHS HUB

The work of the Maths Hub is funded by the DfE to offer all state funded Kent & Medway schools the opportunity to improve mathematics through Teaching for Mastery. Applications are now open for free CPD recruitment opportunities across all phases, with some exciting new programmes for 21-22!

Primary
Highlighting Mastering Number Huge excitement for this project recently announced by NCETM! A year-long programme to run in thousands of primary schools from September, aimed at strengthening the understanding of number and fluency with number facts, among children in the first three years of school. Schools can still apply for the next round of applications (extended deadline 2 July).

Secondary
Highlighting SKTM Secondary Early Career Teachers Just revealed! This project is designed to support secondary early career teachers in developing specialist knowledge for teaching mathematics to enable them to understand, teach and support pupils with maths in the classroom.

Post-16
Highlighting New to Core Maths Teachers who are new to this subject will be supported in developing specialist knowledge for teaching for Core Maths and to increase confidence to teach, with a primary focus on subject knowledge and pedagogy.

Phonics Reading Leader workshops
The training is run in conjunction with Springhill English Hub (Southampton)

Phonic Reading Leader workshops - STARTING 8th July
This four-part free CPD will be an opportunity for Reading Leaders to plan for the upcoming school year with growing confidence and expertise.
