‘Professional Development to Shape Lives’

Teaching School Hubs (TSHs) are school-led centres of excellence in professional development, serving a designated area of the country. Acting with the overarching consideration that ‘effective professional development is the most important factor in school improvement,’ these 87 centres of excellence have a clear focus and mandate to support in delivering on the commitments set out in the Teacher Recruitment and Retention Strategy, creating a world-class teacher development system by transforming the training and support teachers and school leaders receive at every stage of their career.

These teacher development reforms aim to create a ‘golden thread’ of high-quality evidence underpinning the support, training, and development available through the entirety of a teacher’s career. As TSHs we provide evidence-based programmes and qualifications, helping to support teachers to progress from their initial teacher training (ITT) through whichever career pathway they choose.

Most trainees follow one of the School Direct routes to QTS.

The School Direct (tuition fee) programme allows you to learn on the job as your training is based in a KMT partner school that will support you as you work towards QTS.

The Salaried Programme is an employment- based route for graduates, typically with some experience of transferable work history. You’ll earn a salary while you train towards your QTS, you won't need to pay any tuition fees.

KMT can provide trainees with the opportunity to gain level 7 PGCE ( Post Graduate Certificate in Education) qualification. This is a distance learning PGCE, completed online and delivered and assessed by Leeds Beckett University.

Entry Requirements :

The following are the qualifications you will need in order to enroll on the Initial Teacher Training :

O’ Level/GCSE A-C pass grade/new grade Level 4 – 9 in English & Mathematics (and Science for Primary applicants).

A degree classification of 2:2 or better is required however, KMT will consider 3rd Class degrees when supported by other strengths and circumstances. For Secondary courses this ideally needs to be in an area relevant to the subject in which you will be training. See note 2 below.

Other qualifications and personal experiences of working with young people, strengthen all applications considerably.

Assessment Only Route to QTS with KMT

If your school already employs an unqualified teacher then the school can apply for them to complete the AO route with KMT.

The Assessment Only route is not a training route and was designed for unqualified teachers already meeting the following criteria:

- At least two years teaching experience as an unqualified teacher (this does not include working as a TA/HTLA or Cover Supervisor)

- At least two years teaching two consecutive key stages across the phase and subject in which they will be assessed in (we offer 5-11, 11-16 or 11-19)

- Taught in at least two schools (this can include other settings or schools abroad)

- Already meeting the Teachers' Standards to a very high level

This route takes 3 months to complete.

TGTSH and KMT are always at the end of the phone or email if we require any support or assistance - nothing is ever too much trouble. They often know the answer immediately but, on the occasions where they don't, they will go away and find out coming back to you with a response in a timely fashion. They know how hard schools work and want to ensure that our partnership runs smoothly for the best interests of everyone involved.

We have worked with KMT for the past three years and have been delighted with the impact the partnership has had. Our trainees gain excellent research led training and our mentors have strong links with course tutors who understand the pressures schools are under. If I had to identify one stand out quality, it would be the excellent communication that is provided by KMT to support trainees and mentors alike. As a result, many trainees have a springboard to the ECT programme and beyond into successful careers.
